Final Exams Kick-Off Holiday Party – 12.7.2012 On Friday, December 7th, TRiO had a holiday party to relieve the stress of our students before final exams. Students brought a gift for children for the holidays and enjoyed a light lunch. |

University of California, San Diego and San Diego State University – 11.16.2012 TRiO students, along with the Transfer Center, went on a field trip to visit University of California, San Diego and San Diego State University. Students were able to tour the campus at both schools and see how student life is. Students enjoyed lunch at San Diego State in the student union with current SDSU students. |

Getty Villa – 11.13.2012 TRiO students attended College Night at the Getty Villa in Malibu to enjoy an evening of art, music, food, and fun. Students were able to view objects from ancient Greece and Rome as well as a caricature of themselves from an artist on-site. Students were encouraged to wear a toga and to see a fashion show of ancient Greek and Roman attire. |

California Science Center – 10.19.2012 The students attended an IMAX presentation about the Mysteries of Egypt and explored the Cleopatra exhibit. The Cleopatra exhibit was interactive and students walked around with an audio remote that gave them insight as to what was happening in Cleopatra’s life at different stages. Students were able to tour the Science Center before lunch. |

Welcome Back Seminar – 9.12.2012 On Wednesday, September 12, Myron H. Dembo, Ph.D, Emeritus Professor of Educational Psychology University of Southern California spoke on Improving Learning Skills Through Increased Motivation. It was very well attended and students received information on how to become a better student. |

Museum of Tolerance – 11.18.2011 A tour, led by a docent of the Museum of Tolerance, enabled our students to gain the most knowledge about the exhibits at this museum. The exhibits were very diverse giving our students a wide expanse of information. Most of the participants expressed a desire to go back with their families.

Cal State San Bernardino and UC Riverside – 11.04.2011 On Friday, November 4th, TRiO took our students to two campuses – one a Cal State and one UC to see the difference between the two schools. An admissions workshop was held on each campus so students could determine if they were eligible for these schools. A tour was then given which familiarized our students with each campus.

Recognition/Awards Banquet – 6.03.2011 On Friday, June 3rd from 5:00-7:00, TRiO’s end of the year banquet will be held. There will be motivational speakers, entertainment , awards and food. This culminates our events for the year.

Financial Literacy Workshop – 05.06.2011 As of 2010, all TRiO students must have financial literacy training. We had a workshop on Friday, May 6 from 8:30-12:30 run by Professor Greg Bernhard. Some of the topics he covered were Money Anxiety, Budgeting, Borrowing Basics, Credit Reports and Credit Cards. The students comments indicated that they left feeling informed and that the speaker was outstanding.

Cal State Channel Islands – 04.29.2011 On Friday, April 29, 2011, TRiO visited the campus of Cal State Channel Islands which is in Camarillo. After an admissions workshop, students were given a tour of the campus. Many expressed interest in attending this university because of its size. There are 3800 students attending this campus.

Ronald Reagan Library and Museum – 03.18.2011 Our trip to the Ronald Reagan Library and Museum was informative and interesting. Besides learning about President Reagan and his Presidency, students were able to board Air Force One, see the inside of the Oval Office and a piece of the Berlin Wall among other points of interest.

UC Santa Barbara –10.22.2010 TRiO students interested in visiting the University of California, Santa Barbara campus attended a field trip to the school. We had an informative admissions workshop and a tour of the cam pus. There was then an opportunity for the students to go to other departments and buildings on their own

The Getty Villa – 10.01.2010 TRiO students were very excited to visit the Getty Villa in Malibu. This museum features cultures of the Ancient Mediterranean World. Audio tours were purchased for the students and they were able to go through the exhibits at their own pace. We also had a docent led Architecture and Gardens tour.

Welcome Back Seminar – 09.23.2010 Various departments on campus were represented at this information workshop. An alumnus from LAVC’s TRiO program who is at UC Santa Barbara spoke.

Nursing Workshop – 07.30.2010 This well-attended workshop dealt with information on how to be successful in entering the nursing program at the college/university of your choice. It included information on nursing prerequisites, the TEAS test and volunteer/internship opportunities in hospitals.

Award/Recognition Night – 05.21.2010 This year our banquet was held on May 21, 2010. Alumni spoke about their experiences and awards were given to students for graduation and academic achievement. Grant Aid scholarships were also given to select students.
|

Cal State Long Beach – 04.16.2010 TRiO students were given a comprehensive admissions workshop and tour of the campus of Cal State Long Beach. Many students expressed interest in attending this campus and the admissions workshop was very informative as to the majors available scholarships were also given to select students.

CSUN Campus Trip - 11.13.2009 The TRiO program visited the CSUN campus in November because applications were due on November 30th. In order to give students a taste of The CSUN campus and its programs we had a one hour transfer orientation with a question and answer session. As part of this orientation, the EOP department from CSUN had representatives in attendance. A one hour guided campus tour provided students with general and specific information about campus life. The TRiO students then had free time to explore the campus and get a free lunch.

The Getty Center - 10.23.2009 The TRiO program visited the Getty Center Museum located in the hills of Los Angeles. We had a Docent led Collection Highlights Tour which provided an overview of major works in the Museum’s collection. Students were then given time to explore the galleries and gardens on their own and have lunch.

UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Merced - 05.07.2009 From May 7 to May 9, TRiO students, in partnership with Puente and EOPS went on a Northern California Bus Trip to UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Merced and San Jose State. The purpose of this trip was to give students an awareness of campuses out of the Los Angeles area.\

Cal State Los Angeles - 04.24.2009 On Friday, April 24th, TRiO students visited the Cal State Los Angeles campus where they were given a tour of the campus and an admissions workshop. After the regular tour was over, students interested in an Administration of Justice major were able to tour the new Forensic Building and have a workshop dealing with this major.

Griffith Observatory - 03.27.2009 On March 27th, TRiO students took a field trip to the Griffith Observatory. After free time to view the exhi its such as the Cosmic Connection, Edge of Space Exhibits, and the Gunther Depths of Space Exhibits, students attended a show in the theater called “Centered in the Universe” with a projection of the stars on the planetarium ceiling and a live lecturer imparting information about the universe.

University of Southern California - 11.04.2008 TRiO students interested in applying to or just visiting the University of Southern California went on a field trip to the college on Transfer Day. Since this was open to all colleges, there were many presentations such as: Admission and Transfer Credit, Marshall School of Business, Viterbi School of Engineering, Annenberg School for Communication and Financial Aid. This was followed by a campus tour and an academic program fair. Students who attended stated that this helped them make a decision about attending USC.

WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL - 9.27.2008 Each year since its founding in 1919, the Los Angeles Philharmonic has been hailed as Southern California’s leading performing arts institution. The Walt Disney Concert Hall, which opened in 2003, had a program of Peter and the Wolf by the Philharmonic orchestra accompanied by puppetry. It was a very enjoyable afternoon for all who attended.

Cal State Channel Islands Trip - 5.02.2008 TRIO students visited the campus of California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo. On arrival at the CSUCI campus, we were welcomed by a CSU Channel Islands Representative who then took us on a campus tour. As well as classrooms we saw a dormitory room so students could get an idea of what living on campus would be like. After the tour, we were taken to the Administration Building where we had an informational meeting on general admission. Since many of our students are interested in the Nursing program, we had a presentation on their admission policies as well.

Award/Recognition Night - This event is held each year at the end of the spring semester. At the Award/Recognition Night TRiO students are given awards for graduation, academic achievement, and grant aid scholarship. The Grant Aid scholarship is a financial award given to students that have actively participated in the TRiO program.

California Science Center - 12.07.2007 We took our TRIO students to the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Many students had never seen an IMAX film so we purchased tickets for the Sea Monsters film. After the film, we did a self-guided tour of the Science Center, viewing such exhibits as World of Life with its Life Tunnel and Cell Lab, Energy Factory (Digestive Tract), Blood and Hearts, Brains on Parade, Surgery Theater and The Human Miracle as well as seeing Tess, a 50 foot body simulator. We also went to the Creative World exhibit where we had an Earthquake Experience, learned about Digital Imaging, entered a Wind Tunnel and were able to see demonstrations of the strengths and weaknesses of various materials. There was a special exhibit on fear which was very interesting to our students.

Welcome Back Seminar - Each semester the TRiO Program holds a Welcome Back Seminar for all TRiO Student. This Welcome Back Seminar gives TRiO an opportunity to address all returning and new students. The purpose of this event is to inform all TRiO students of new TRiO activities, campus activities, new programs and also to provide new TRiO student with the tools and contacts that they will need to be successful.

LACMA - Los Angeles County Museum of Art - 4.20.2007 The LACMA TRiO trip is a cultural activity. The trip was spectacular with exhibitions on American Landscapes (1890–1950), Contemporary Photographs, and the Permanent Collection. The Trip was guided which provided the TRiO Students with information on all the art pieces and exhibitions. The TRiO students also had free time to explore and get a free lunch.

UCLB Campus Trip - 5.11.2007 TRiO students visited the campus of California State University Long Beach. The campus was Wonderful and we were given a guided tour of all the buildings and facilities. The students that attended the California State University Long Beach Tuor and planed to go to a CSU changed their CSU of choice to CSULB. We were shown most of these college on our tour, as well as academic and physical education buildings.

A Christmas Carol - 12.08.2006 Fifty-two TRiO students and staff attended the production of “A Christmas Carol” on Friday evening, December 8th. A free dinner of Lasagna, salad, garlic bread and carrot cake was served preceding the play. The play was well done - both funny and sad and showed many of our participants a side of LAVC that they did not know about – the Theater Department and the talented students enrolled in theater.

The Getty Center - 03.17.2006 The TRiO program visited the Getty Center Museum located in the hill of Los Angeles. The trip included a garden and architectural tour. In addition we were able to appreciate the artwork and various artists on display in the museum. Aside from being exposed to art; students also had the opportunity to meet fellow TRiO students.

The Hollywood Bowl - 8.11.2006 The TRiO Hollywood Bowl trip was a performing arts cultural activity. The event was Tchaikovsky performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The show was spectacular with the USC marching band performing the final song with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The performance ended with one of the best fire works displays. The trip included free dinner, free transpiration, and the tickets were provided free of charge.

UCSD Campus Trip - 7.28.2006 TRiO students visited the campus of UC San Diego which is in La Jolla. The campus was beautiful and we were given a guided tour of all the buildings and facilities. UC San Diego has the distinction of being the only campus that has 6 separate colleges within the university. Each college is independent, yet all are interrelated. We were shown most of these colleges on our tour, as well as academic and physical education buildings. |
