Grant Outline

Los Angeles Valley College was awarded a Title III Accelerated Pathways to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and Articulation Grant from the U.S. Department of Education, for a total of $ 4.35 million over five years (October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2016). The grant activities will be geared towards increasing the number of Hispanic and other low-income students obtaining degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics; decrease the amount of time in the mathematics pipeline; increase student interest, success and confidence in math and STEM-related fields; develop model articulation agreements with primary transfer institutions; and use high quality, timely data to improve participation outcomes in order to increase enrollment, persistence and completion in STEM degrees and transfer to four-year institutions.

Goals

  1. Redesign of STEM-critical mathematics curricula and development of Summer Bridge programs to decrease the time through the math sequence, increase math success, and the number of STEM degree completers and transfers into baccalaureate STEM programs, particularly among Hispanic and low-income students
  2. Curricular infusion of instructional technology, Supplemental Instruction, collaborative learning, and STEM advising across all mathematics course levels
  3. Development of model articulation/transfer agreements with LAVC's primary transfer institutions, California State University Northridge (CSUN) and California State University Los Angeles (CSULA); development of transfer resources and course-embedded STEM advising
  4. Continuous tracking, analysis and use of high-quality, timely data to improve program participant outcomes in the areas of enrollment, persistence, and completion, to make data-driven decisions and modify project components as needed to ensure the maximum impact of new initiatives
  5. Provide more professional development for faculty members in the use of technology and best practices in Foundational and Pre-Transfer mathematics instruction
