LA Valley College
Sample Placement Tests

Math Samples

There are three different mathematics placement tests that are given to determine proper placement for incoming students. The following pages provide self-grading, sample tests for each of the different levels: elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, and pre-calculus. The samples range in length from 20 - 25 questions and are multiple choice. The actual tests are longer in length but are still multiple choice. While taking the sample, make sure to record your answer in case there is a technical problem. Also, after the test is graded, write the topics for the problems you missed, this will help you determine what areas you need to study more.
