Job Training Completes CNC Training at Esterline in Sylmar

Sylmar - - Job Training and Esterline Corporation have successfully partnered to teach Computer Numerical Control (CNC) to employees of the Sylmar corporation. The objective of the 30-hour training sessions, held twice a week for one month, was designed to provide current employees with entry-level CNC skills.  The selected employees work in a variety of areas including the machining, deburring, drilling, and materials departments at Esterline.

For their efforts, the group of 14 individuals were honored in a graduation celebration held in the company's conference room.

According to Rose Wanjohi, senior human resources generalist with Esterline, “We have openings within our CNC department, and we’d prefer to hire from within. This is the type of program that will allow cross training of our employees and prepare them to move into our CNC department.”

Machine shop manager Shawn Roche was very pleased with the motivation and dedication of the employees. Shawn indicated he has already seen improvement with the confidence of his staff. In addition, many workers who were not part of the CNC training have asked how they can participate in the next sessions.

A unique part of the training was the use of the Manufacturing Technologies Laboratory (MTL). In conjunction with Haas Automation of Oxnard and the Economic Alliance, the 40-foot MTL is equipped with two CNC machines, laptops, and CNC simulators allowing the students hands-on experience with the use of industry standard equipment. The MTL, staffed with instructor Chuong Vu and assistants Roger Arias and Cesar Crisostomo, kept Esterline employees busy with relevant projects.  Reported Arias, “The MTL allows us to provide a hybrid customized training to suit many manufacturing companies who need to upgrade the skills of their workforce.”
