I
have been teaching Psychiatric Nursing here at LAVC for more than 18
years. I began my nursing career in New York City, graduating from
Kingsborough Community College and a few years later completed a BSN at
Hunter College CUNY. I moved to Los Angeles the following year, and
became employed at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute working in their
newly opened Gero-psychiatric unit. A few years later I received my
Masters in Nursing from UCLA. I was fortunate to have had opportunities
to work in areas of Community Mental Health, Gerontological and
Community Health nursing in clinical practice and research prior to
beginning my Nursing Education career. I have a passion for teaching
nursing and caring for older adults and clients with mental illness -
two very special populations- I hope to be able to share my passion with
you.

NS110 - Psych-Mental Health Nursing
Welcome to Nursing Science 110 Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing.
You are about to enter into an area of nursing that is less familiar
to most of you. You might even feel a bit scared upon first entering a
psychiatric inpatient unit. This is a normal response for many students.
You will not have any physical tools to actually use, and that may seem
strange to you - you will learn to use yourself and the skills you
learned in communication to facilitate your clients journey towards
mental health. This is called "the therapeutic use of self." You may
find the web links that appear in this homepage to be helpful in getting
you acquainted with many of the problems your patients will be
experiencing. Please check out these great resources.
Good Luck! See you in class.
