TOPICAL LINKS

This page contains  links to topics of interest in biology that are not linked via the class notes.  Each link will be accompanied by a brief description of the topic and how it applies to biology.

Carbon Dioxide Lakes

A rare geochemical event, the degassing of a lake,  has great implications for local fauna (including humans).

Gecko Feet

Describes how geckos use sub-atomic forces to stick to surfaces.

Dendrochronology

Analysis of tree rings to date past events.

Hot Water Animal (requres Quicktime plugin)

Pompeii worms live near deep sea hydrothermal vents where the temperature approaches the boiling point of water.

Molecular Motors

Animated depictions of ATP synthase, its components, and how it works.

Rat Hazard Detectors

African giant pouched rats are used to sniff out land mines.

Bugs From Hell

Bacteria have been found living in rocks a mile or more beneath the earth's surface.  There are implications for the possible presence of subterranean life on other planets.

Impossible Physics

This site is dedicated to the inventiveness of those attempting to build perpetual motion and other impossible machines.  Although not biological, per se, it is instructive to see how scientific principles can be not known, misunderstood, or just plain ignored.

Prebiotic food ingredients

See also the interview with the pioneer investigator, Dr. Glenn R. Gibson.  The interview link shows a photo of Dr. Gibson's "Robogut," an apparatus designed to simulate the internal environment of the human digestive tract, complete with microflora.

Eyebrow mites

Tiny arachnids that live in the hair follicles.  Compare adult with larval stages. Other mites.

Ant Web

A very usefull and interesting site that covers the taxonomy and distribution of ants worldwide

Talk.Orgins Archive

A well designed site that gives excellent and informative rebuttal to Creationist ideas               (especially, see the essay by E. E. Max) while at the same time providing links to Creationist sites for perusal.

Vampire Bats

Good general introduction to these fascinating creatures.  The feeding method is to lap (not suck) blood.  Also, newest finding is a substance in their saliva that dissolves clots and may prevent strokes.

Musical Polylpeptides

This site assigns each amino acid a note on a musical scale and can produce tunes that are specific for a given primary structure of a protein.  Musical instruments are assigned to specific structural motifs in complex proteins so that an ensemble effect is produced.

Alien Species

A world wide database of alien introduced species.  Gives biological data, life
history, ecological impact and current invasive status.  Photos also.

Turning the Pages

A site which presents rare books that can be viewed and the pages turned (virtually).
Included are one of Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks, Andreas Versalius' anatomy book and an herbal book by Elizabeth Blackwell .  Requires Macromedia Shockwave download.

Textbook of Bacteriology

An online textbook that emphasizes medical microbiology.  Well organized and presented.

Shape Memory Alloys

Shape Memory Alloys (SMA's) are used to mimic the behavior of muscle-tendon  interactions and improve healing after surgical repair of fractured bone and aircraft performance.  Includes video demonstrations.

Blood Substitutes

Good outline description of current blood substitutes.  Last updated June, 2000.  For an outline history of blood transfusion see this link

Insect Borne Disease and History

A most interesting site that describes in almost the style of a book novel the interrelationship between major historical events and how they were affected by insect borne diseases.

Ichthyosaurs

This site is a good illustration of how evolutionary ideas are developed.  Using comparisons with living organisms, the evolution of ichthyosaur anatomy, behavior and physiology can be outlined with considerable confidence.  The site is also a good read.

Horseshoe Crabs

Full of interesting information and pictures of these queer creatures, holdovers from
a very distant past (300 mya).

A Tour of the Face

An entertaining and informative tour of the face with many little known factoids thrown in
to great effect.  An excerpt from the book The Face.

Radioactive isotopes

An expert's excellent explanation of and discourse on radiometric methods for determining the ages of rocks (the site also has numerous links to other sources).  What makes this site stand out is that it was created by a Bible-believing Christian old-Earth protagonist who knocks the wind out of the sails of the young-Earthers who say that only non-believers and liberals could accept radiometric dating.

Logic and Fallacies

Although there are a number of broken links in this site it still is very informative.  It also boasts an extensive list and description of fallacies of argument.
