Attention Students! Learn How to “Study Smarter, Not Harder” at the STARS Workshop on March 26
The LAVC Strategic Team for the Advancement and Retention of Students (STARS) Committee and LAVC Professional Development will hold a study skills workshop entitled "Study Smarter, Not Harder" on Tuesday, March 26 from 1-2:30 p.m. in Library and Academic Resource Center 201. This STARS workshop is designed to help students gain the skills they need to be more successful in their studies, and will give faculty and staff resources to help students be more successful. Students who attend this workshop will find out how to use study time more effectively, learn why index cards are not enough, get new note-taking strategies, see how to analyze tests, and learn strategies for retaining information. Faculty and staff will receive handouts to improve students' study skills and performance, and help students handle test-taking anxiety. LAVC Biology Department to Present its Spring 2013 Science Speaker Series Starting on March 25
The LAVC Biology Department will begin its Spring 2013 Science Speaker Series with a "Planetary Protection and Sub-Seafloor Microbiology Connection: A Personal Journey from Community College to Graduate School" presentation by Gustavo A Ramirez, a doctoral student from USC, on Monday, March 25 from 7-8 p.m. in Monarch Hall. There will also be a Speaker's Reception from 5-6 p.m. in Biology Department Conference Room in Allied Health & Sciences Center 210 for students interested in meeting the speaker before the presentation; it is free for the first 25 students by reservation only. The Science Speaker Series is designed to inform the student population and general public on current advancements within the scientific community. Gustavo will speak about his research of microbes from the sub-seafloor and its connection to looking for life on other planets. You're Invited to the LAVC Choral Concert "Something New" on March 24
The LAVC Music Department will present a choral music concert entitled "Something New" on Sunday, March 24 at 7 p.m. in the Main Stage Theater. This concert will be conducted by Glenn Carlos, and will feature the LAVC Philharmonic Choir, Monarch Jazz, and LAVC College Choir performing songs made famous by The Manhattan Transfer, music from Brasil, Flamenco music, and several pieces by Los Angeles composers. Help Keep Valley Glen Clean!—Neighborhood Community Clean Up "Strike Force Team" to Gather at LA Valley College on March 23
Councilmember Paul Krekorian, Council District 2, in partnership with the Valley Glen Neighborhood Association and the Greater Valley Glen Council, will sponsor a Community Clean-Up "Strike Force Team" Command Post at LA Valley College on Saturday, March 23 at 9 a.m.-12 noon in Parking Lot A. Members of the LAVC campus community are invited to help the residents of Valley Glen identify graffiti, abandoned bulky items, abandoned shopping carts, and out-of-date yard sale notifications in the community. Teams will fan out into defined areas to report back to the Command Post, manned by LAPD Senior Lead Officers who will follow up by sending out the City trucks and Graffiti Abatement personnel to do the actual clean-up that day. The goal is to cover all of Valley Glen and get rid of the community eyesores and unsightly items—in a single morning! Lunch for all workers will be provided at the end of the event by the Valley Glen Neighborhood Association. LAVC to Celebrate Student Achievement at the Spring 2013 Dean's Reception
LAVC Student Activities, Associated Student Union, and Tau Alpha Epsilon will honor outstanding students at the Spring 2013 Dean's Reception on Thursday, March 21 at 1 p.m. in Monarch Hall. This semi-annual event recognizes students who have made the Dean's List and President's Honor's List. The featured speaker at the event will be Lloyd S. Jones, the LAVC's first student and a member of the college's Pioneer Class (1949). Students selected to the Dean's List are full-time students with at least a 3.5 GPA in 12 or more units at LAVC, or part-time students with at least a 3.5 GPA in 6-11 units who have completed more than 12 cumulative units at LAVC. Students who have been on the Dean's List for three consecutive semesters are selected to be on the President's Honor's List. In addition, all students with a 3.5 GPA or higher are eligible to be a member of the Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor society for 2-year colleges, and Tau Alpha Epsilon, LAVC's honor society. Need to take the GED Test? Come to the Official GED Test Registration/Orientation on March 21
The LAVC CalWORKs Office will hold a mandatory orientation/registration session for the Official GED Test on Thursday, March 21 at 9 a.m. in Bungalow 14; the full test will be offered on Friday-Saturday, April 19-20, and the partial test will be offered on Thursday, April 18. The Official GED Test is offered every month to the community. In addition, CalWORKs offers a GED practice test on Friday mornings at 9 a.m. for a $10 fee; not offered on the official testing date each month. Those interested in taking the practice test, must meet in Bungalow 14 at 8:50 a.m. to sign up. Eva Beneke is a widely acclaimed soloist, chamber musician and published composer. A visiting accreditation team from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges will be on campus from March 11-14. The ACCJC Visiting Team will be at Valley College touring the campus, conducting interviews, and holding forums to hear from the campus community. Donate Blood, and Held Save Three Lives! LAVC to Hold a Blood Drive on March 12
The American Red Cross and the LAVC Student Health Center will hold a Blood Drive on Tuesday, March 12 at 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in Monarch Hall. All participating donors will receive a voucher for two tickets to an LA Galaxy soccer game ($10 processing fee per ticket) and a voucher for discounted tickets to Sesame Street Live at the Nokia Theatre. Also, donors who donate blood three times or 2 ALXY donations during the 2012-2013 school year will be recognized as a "Super Star Donor" with a certificate and special giveaway at a special recognition ceremony on May 15, 2013. Donors can donate whole blood every 56 days and ALYX every 112 days, so plan ahead! LAVC will be having additional blood drives April 17 and May 15. LAVC Associated Student Union, the Village and the LAVC Diversity Committee will be celebrating Black History Month with a variety of activities for students, faculty and staff. The Culture of Peace Exhibition on "Artists as Peacemakers" in the LAVC Library Reopens on February 4; Exhibit Extended to February 28
Soka Gakkai International-USA Buddhist Association (SGI-USA) is presenting a "Culture of Peace" traveling exhibition series on the first floor of the LAVC Library & Academic Resource Center. The current exhibition called "Artists as Peacemakers" is dedicated to the many artists who are working to build a culture of peace, and has been extended until February 28, 2013. The exhibition series is produced by SGI- Nations culture of peace initiative. Each exhibit is composed of a series of colorful fabric panels which include colorful photos, informative text and inspirational quotes on various aspects of the culture of peace. The exhibit content is non-religious and non-partisan in nature and it is the continuing hope that these exhibitions will raise awareness and stimulate meaningful dialogue. Students in Professor Beaton's Broadcasting Radio Programming & Production class are producing live radio shows featuring the music of some of R&B soul pioneers including Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, James Brown and more. In addition, KVCM DJ's will be playing the greatest love songs of all time, just in time for Valentine's Day. American Guitar Society to Present a Concert by Classical and Flamenco Guitarist Adam del Monte
The American Guitar Society (AGS) in association with the LAVC Music Department will present a classical and flamenco guitar concert by Adam del Monte on Saturday, February 23 at 8 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall (Music 106). Adam del Monte is winner of the 1997 Stotsenberg International Competition, and he is acknowledged worldwide as a rare talent in flamenco and classical guitar genres. The LAVC Art Gallery will present an opening reception for Artist Gegam Kacherian in conjunction with its latest exhibition entitled "Gegam Kacherian: Thirty-Six Year Survey" on Thursday, February 21 from 6-9 p.m. The exhibition will be on display from February 14-April 11 in the LAVC Art Gallery. This show, is the first retrospective of Armenian artist Gegam Kacherian in the United States, and charts the trajectory of Kacherian's art practice, highlighting examples from his early pieces to his recent semi-abstract and figurative paintings. Zev Garber, Professor Emeritus of Jewish Studies at LAVC, has been invited to be the featured speaker at the Diane and Guilford Glazer Institute for Jewish Studies at Pepperdine University on Tuesday, February 19. He will talk about "The Jewish Jesus and the Challenge to the Church and the Synagogue". The Glazer Institute was designed to increase a majority-Christian academic community's exposure to, discussion of, and awareness of Judaism, Jewish Studies, and Jewish culture. Limited Winter Session Hours of Operation for the Math Lab, Writing Center and Computer Commons

Starting February 3, 2013, LAVC will be a "Smoke Free Campus" except in the following four new designated smoking areas: west of the Library & Academic Resource Center (near College Road North), southwest corner of Parking Lot D (near Campus Drive and Emelita Street), between the Field House and Bungalow 78 (near Ethel Avenue), and south of the Engineering Building (near Parking Lot A). This new smoking policy and the new designated smoking areas were created due to popular campus demand, and was established through our shared governance process and approved by the College President. LA Valley College to Offer a Small Selection of Classes for Winter Session 2013
LAVC will offer a limited scope of courses for its Winter 2013 Session. Classes for the five-week session will start on January 2, 2013. The classes are being offered as a direct result of the voters passing Proposition 30, and will help to meet student demand. LAVC plans to schedule classes in English, math, and ESL foundational skills, as well as critical thinking, oral communications, and written communications. A more diverse array of courses will be offered in the Spring 2013 semester. The Winter Session 2013 schedule of classes will be posted online by November 19. Current LAVC students can find their Winter 2013 registration appointment by logging into the Student Information System (select "View Reg Appt" and then choose "Winter"). LAVC to Present the "Artists as Peacemakers" Exhibit in the "Culture of Peace" Series Starting December 3
Soka Gakkai International-USA Buddhist Association (SGI-USA) will feature the next exhibit in its "Culture of Peace" traveling exhibition series called "Artists as Peacemakers" from December 3, 2012-January 31, 2013 in the LAVC Library & Academic Resource Center. This exhibit, which is the fourth part of a rotating exhibition that is on display at LAVC during the 2012-2013 academic year, is dedicated to the many artists who are working to building a culture of peace. The exhibition series is produced by SGI-USA's Peace and Community Relations Department to raise awareness of the values and behaviors of the United Nations culture of peace initiative. Each exhibit is composed of a series of colorful fabric panels which include colorful photos, informative text and inspirational quotes on various aspects of the culture of peace. The exhibit content is non-religious and non-partisan in nature and it is the continuing hope that these exhibitions will raise awareness and stimulate meaningful dialogue. Nursing students from LAVC's Nursing Department are holding a food drive for San Fernando Valley Food Bank from November 1-30. Donations may be dropped off in the Nursing Department (Allied Health & Sciences 1st Floor) during Monday-Friday between 8 a.m.- 3 p.m.. LAVC Women's Basketball Player Annie Avanessian Named as CCCAA's and CCCSPA's January Female Athlete of the Month
Annie Avanessian, a LAVC sophomore on the Women's Basketball team, has been selected as the 2013 California Community College Athletic Association's (CCCAA) and the California Community College Sports Information Association's (CCCSIA) January Female Athlete of the Month. The state committee selected Avanessian for leading the Monarchs to a 6-1 record in the month with wins over two ranked teams. She is also the leading the Western State Conference South Division with 19.0 ppg; she has averaged 17.9 ppg, 9 rpg, 2.1 apg, and 2.2 spg. In addition to receiving state honors, Avenessian is also a five-time Western State Conference Player of the Week, her most recent selection coming last week. Congratulations!
LAVC Students Receive $500 Achieving the Dream Scholarships from the Los Angeles Community College District
The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) has awarded 57 LAVC students with $500 Achieving the Dream scholarships; Valley College received the most scholarships in the District. The scholarship was open to all students enrolled at one of the nine colleges in the LACCD who met the following criteria: a first-time student with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, completed at least 15 units, completed the assessment exam on campus, successfully completed an English or Math course with a "C" or better, submitted an essay on the steps students can take to be more successful in college, and submitted a letter of recommendation. The LACCD secured outside funding for the scholarship. It aligned with the goals student success outlined by Achieving the Dream, a national non-profit that is dedicated to helping more community college student succeed, particularly low-income students and students of color, to stay in school and earn a college certificate or degree. A total of 57 students applied, and all were selected to receive the scholarship.
SGI-USA Donates Book to the LAVC Library and Establishes a New "Building a Culture of Peace" Scholarship
On November 27, 2012, Valley College held a special ceremony to recognize Soka Gakkai International-USA Buddhist Association (SGI-USA) for heightening public awareness of the values, attitudes and behaviors of the United Nations culture of peace initiative and for its generous support. SGI-USA donated 50 books on the topics of "peace" to the LAVC Library, and also established a $250 "Building a Culture of Peace" scholarship with the LAVC Foundation. The scholarship will be awarded before the Fall 2013 semester to an LAVC student who demonstrates their accomplishments as a peace builder and/or for their ideas for building a culture of peace. In addition, LAVC is hosting SGI-USA's traveling exhibition series entitled "A Culture of Peace" in the college's new Library and Academic Resource Center during the 2012-2013 academic year. LAVC Job Training Selected to Administer Part of a $15 Million Department of Labor Grant
Los Angeles Valley College has been selected as one of 12 community colleges nationwide to receive part of a U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) $15 Million grant. Established through the DOL's Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College Career Training (TAACCCT), the grant will be administered by LAVC's Job Training Program in partnership with the college's Biology Department. The three-year project establishes the Community College Consortium for Biosciences Credentials, which is will be led by Forsyth Technical Community College of North Carolina, and will develop core biosciences competencies in laboratory skills, bio-manufacturing and medical devices, and introduce stackable and latticed credentials to help trade-impacted workers get new jobs. Certificates will include core biosciences skills, core laboratory skills, core medical devices skills, biomedical plastics and environmental monitoring. The Los Angeles component of this grant project was initiated and developed by the Southern California Biomedical Council (SoCalBio), the trade association of the bioscience industry in Los Angeles, Orange County and adjacent communities in the Inland Empire and Gold Coast of California. Through its Workforce Development Committee, SoCalBio coordinated this grant project nationally in collaboration with Consortium members, such as Forsyth College in North Carolina and NBC2 in Maine, and regionally with endorsements from a partnership including, in addition to LAVC, the City of Los Angeles Workforce Investment Board, California Employment Development Department, Baxter Healthcare Corporation, and Grifols Biologicals. LAVC English Department Publishes Its Literary Magazine Manuscript 48
The LAVC English Department announces the publication of the 2012 edition of Manuscript, the Valley College literary magazine. The publication, which is an online magazine, features fiction and poetry written by the following students: Danielle Acebes, Laura Aved, Antonia Benyovszky-Jones, DeWayne Chavez, Oscar Chicas, Tirui Getekian, Tracy Gimino, David Kornblatt, Molly LaFleur, Steven Lipton, Jesse Marenco, Scott Nicols-Collier, Irene Petrosyan, Gerald Ruiz, Shane Schwarz, Karla Silva, Cara Thomas, and Marie Zapien. This annual began in 1959, and continues to maintain the tradition of publishing pieces of fiction and poetry written exclusively by LAVC students. LAVC Upward Bound Math and Science Program Receives a $1.2 Million Grant
The U.S. Department of Education awarded LAVC a $1.2 million grant over a five-year period to fund an Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) Program. LAVC has partnered with Ulysses S. Grant and Robert Fulton High Schools to provide services to 60 students. The UBMS Program will offer high school students with after school tutoring, Saturday Enrichment classes, a six-week summer program, college tours, and cultural awareness activities. The goal of the program is for students to graduate from high school, enroll in and complete a post-secondary program of study in mathematics and science, and pursue a career in mathematics and/or science field. Valley Glen Neighborhood Council is Seeking LAVC Students to Participate in its Board and Committees
The Valley Glen Neighborhood Council (VGNC) is looking for students and faculty who are interested in representing local issues, promoting school information and causes, and want to be a part of its board or a committee member during the 2013 calendar year. Jennifer Fong-Borucki Named as One of the San Fernando Valley Business Journal's 40 Under 40
Jennifer Fong-Borucki, manager of public relations at LAVC, was named to the San Fernando Valley Business Journal's 40 Under 40 for 2012. This annual recognition is awarded to the forty best and brightest young professionals in the San Fernando Valley. The recipients are being recognized for the significant role they play in the success of their business, the impact they have on company culture, and their involvement in the community. Over 100 executives were considered for this award. Congratulations!
Earth Science Instructor Jacquelyn Hams on Second Research Trip to Study Ancient Ice in Antarctica
Jacquelyn Hams, associate professor of oceanography in LAVC’s Earth Sciences Department,is participating in her second teacher-research experience with Boston University Antarctic researcher David Marchant. Dr. Marchant is studying the presence, movement, and extent of buried glacial ice in several areas of the Dry Valleys of Antarctica using Ground Penetrating Radar, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and surface mapping techniques. The Dry Valleys region of Antarctica is an important analog to Mars and may hold clues for terrestrial climate change, glaciation, and the potential for life on Mars. LAVC's Campus Community Generously Donates Holiday Gifts for the EOPS/CARE Program's "CARE of Kids"
Every holiday season, the LAVC EOPS/CARE (Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education) Program holds a donation drive to get a holiday gifts for children of students in its CARE Program. This year, members of the campus community helped to provide gifts to 102 CARE children. CARE students are low income, single parents enrolled full-time at Valley College. In some cases, the donated "CARE for Kids" gift is the only gift that these children receive for the holidays. The EOPS/CARE Program would like to thank the campus community for their generosity this holiday season. It would also like to especially thank Santa & Sons, Target North Hollywood and OPI Products, Inc. for their generous donations.
