LAVC Theater Department to Hold Auditions for its Spring 2013 Shows Peter and Wendy and Avenue Q

The LAVC Theater Department will hold auditions for its Spring 2013 productions of Peter and Wendy and Avenue Q on Monday, November 26 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. and 7:30-10 p.m., and Tuesday, November 27 from 3:30-6 p.m. and 7-10 pm in the Horseshoe Theater. Peter and Wendy is a new original, never-before-seen adaptation of J. M. Barrie's timeless fantasy of Peter Pan with contemporary songs and dances. All roles are available, seeking all ethnicities, and for many of the roles (Peter, John, Michael, Captain Hook, Nana, Crocodile, etc.), we will be considering both men and women; some roles may double. Winner of the Tony Award (best musical, best score, and best book), Avenue Q is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on "Avenue Q". There, he meets Kate (the girl next door), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (the internet sexpert), Lucy the Slut (need we say more?), and other colorful types who help Princeton finally discover his purpose in life! This musical is sure to offend and delight everyone and is rated "WTF" for colorful language and full puppet nudity! Sign-up sheets and additional information about casting will be posted in the Theater Arts Building. For more information and a cast breakdown, visit the LAVC Theater Arts Department Web page at http://lavctheater.com (click on "Auditions").

Don’t Forget to Plan Ahead This Weekend— Interstate 405 Along the Sepulveda Pass will be Closed on September 29-30

On September 29-30, a second full closure of Interstate 405 (I-405) between Interstate 10 and the 101 Freeway will take place as part of the I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project. The I-405 will reopen on Monday, October 1 at 5 a.m.; ramps and connectors will be reopened by 6 a.m. This closure will enable the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) to demolish south side of the 608-foot-long Mulholland Drive Bridge to accommodate the widening of the I-405 freeway, and to add a northbound high-occupancy vehicle lane through the Sepulveda Pass. As with the south side demolition that took place in July 2011, Metro and Caltrans are concerned that closing the freeway will result in severe congestion on the I-405 and adjoining freeways, perhaps affecting freeways throughout the region. Southern California residents who must travel this weekend, are urged to plan ahead. For more information including detour route maps, visit http://www.metro.net/projects/I-405/.

LAVC Student Wins an International Film Festival Award

Eric Jones, an LAVC student, recently won the “Best Dialogue” Award at the Action On Film International Film Festival for his screenplay called “More Than Skin Deep”. The story for the award-winning science-fiction screenplay was created from a writing assignment in his Spring 2012 English 101 class with LAVC adjunct instructor Debi Hall. As part of the assignment, Eric’s English 101 classmates brainstormed ideas for the story for a play and then he was tasked with combining those ideas into a script for a stage play. He had never written a play before, so Eric was quite surprised when the Hollywood Quarterly wanted to publish his 16-page zombie-esque, dramatic-thriller in its recent Young Writers section. With his success as a newly published playwright, it led him to turn his play into a short screenplay, which was accepted to the Action on Film Festival. The screenplay was nominated by the festival in two categories (Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Short and Best Dialogue), which it won in the latter category. At the festival, Eric met an award-winning director, and they are currently working together in an attempt to bring this script to the screen. A copy of his play is available online at http://www.thehollywoodquarterly.com/jones-eric-more-than-skin-deep/.

California Community Colleges Board of Governors Approves System-wide Enrollment Priorities to Increase Student Success
The California Community Colleges Board of Governors recently approved changes that will establish system-wide enrollment priorities designed to ensure classes are available for students seeking job training, degree attainment or transfer and to reward students who make progress toward their educational goals.
Starting in Fall 2013, new students who have completed college orientation, assessment and developed education plans and continuing students in good academic standing who have not exceeded 100 units (not including units in basic English, math or English as a Second Language) will be given priority over students who do not meet these criteria. Colleges will begin to inform current students of the new policy in the spring 2013 term so those on probation will have an opportunity to seek help to improve their academic standing and those nearing the unit cap can carefully plan their remaining courses. To read the entire press release, visit http://www.californiacommunitycolleges.cccco.edu/Portals/0/DocDownloads/PressReleases/SEP2012/PRESS_RELEASE_BOGPRIORITY_091012x_FINAL.pdf.

Operating hours will vary, so please contact the department/office directly to learn about their summer hours. During the five-week summertime schedule, the college will be able to provide services to the public during extended hours on Monday through Thursday; some offices will remain open on Fridays during the summer, and College Sherriff's will remain on duty every day. This condensed workweek is a cost-saving measure and will help make a reduction in the operating cost for college utilities during the summer. In addition, this change will result in reductions in air quality/smog emissions during the days the College is closed. To view the hours of operation for selected college offices/services, visit www.lavc.edu/officehours.

LAVC Speech Team Wins a National Title and Other Accolades at the National Speech Championships

The LAVC Speech Team recently earned the "Silvia Mariner Award", a Team Gold Medal for "Individual Speaking Events", and a Team Silver Medal for "Overall" at the 2012 Phi Rho Pi National Public Speaking Championship in Schuamburg, Illinois. In addition, every single student on the LAVC team participated in a final round of competition and came home with an award, and for the second year in a row Valley College students claimed a fellowship award for being "most congenial". This year's team, which comprised of seven students, competed against 58 other community colleges from across the country. The following team members took home individual awards: Albert Pugliese (Silver Medal in "Persuasive Speaking", and Silver Medal in "Prose Interpretation of Literature"), Gregory Pugliese (Gold Medal in "Informative Speaking", and a Bronze Medal in "Poetry"), Sodani Chan (Gold Medal in "Readers Theater"), Spencer Belko (Gold Medal in "Informative Speaking", and Gold Medal in "Readers Theater"), John Henry Evans IV (Gold Medal in "Readers Theater", and Bronze Medal in "Prose Interpretation of Literature"), Kathy Martinez (Gold Medal in "Readers Theater", Gold Medal in "Program Oral Interpretation", Silver Medal in "Persuasive Speaking", and Bronze Medal in "Poetry"), and Karine Bagoumian (Bronze Medal in "Speech to Entertain"). The Mariner award is a perpetual award that is given annually to the one team in the nation that has the highest point total earned for the past year of competition through the immediate national tournament. The Overall award is given to the team with highest overall score including debate; however, LAVC does not have a debate team, which meant that LAVC students earned a large number of points in individual speaking events to receive a team award in this category. The team was coached by Duane W. Smith, director of forensics, Josh Miller, department chair of the Speech, and Eric Cullather, coach of the speech team. The Speech Team would especially like to thank the ASU for their generous support, which provided the funding for the team to attend the competition. Congratulations!
