Attention Students! Selected Offices on Campus will be Closed on November 23 in Advance of the Thanksgiving Holiday
Admissions & Records, International Students, Veteran's Services, Financial Aid, Assessment Center, Outreach & Recruitment, the Office of the Vice President of Student Services, and the Writing Center will be closed on Wednesday, November 23 in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday. These offices will also be closed during campus-wide Thanksgiving holiday closure from November 24-27. These offices will reopen on Monday, November 28. Please note: Admissions & Records, International Students, Veteran's Services, Financial Aid, Assessment Center, Outreach & Recruitment, the Office of the Vice President of Student Services will continue their limited hours of operation until December 30. The Associated Student Union (ASU) is holding a "Campus Clean-Up" Day on November 22 from 2-3 p.m.; participants should meet in the ASU Office in the Student Services Center 205. Come get your biodegradable plastic gloves and bags from the ASU office in SSC 205 and start picking up trash! An additional "Campus Clean-Up" day will be held on December 8. LAVC Child Development Department and Family Resource Center to Hold a "Village Family Services" Thanksgiving Food Drive
LAVC Child Development Department (CDD) and Family Resource Center (FRC) will hold a Thanksgiving Food Drive from now-November 22 to assist "Village Family Services" with providing Thanksgiving meal packages for families living in poverty who come from homes of abuse and neglect. They will be collecting any canned or boxed food, including vegetables, stuffing mix, gravy, boxed potatoes/rice and $5 grocery store gift cards to help purchase a turkey. Food donations may be dropped off at the FRC or CDD in the Child Development and Family Complex, or in the ASU Office in the Student Services Center, 2nd Floor before Tuesday, November 22. LAVC has launched a new Web site called Preparing All Students for Success (PASS) to provide the campus community with information and updates on the work being done to improve student success at Valley College. Using the tools and resources of Achieving the Dream (ATD), LAVC will use data more effectively to help develop strategies that will close achievement gaps and improve student outcomes. As part of a campus-wide approach, a team of stakeholders including faculty, staff, administrators and students have been coordinating the college's efforts. LAVC Theater Arts Production of "Spring Awakening" Ends November 19
The LAVC Theater Arts Department will perform "Spring Awakening" on November 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19 at 8 p.m., and November 19 at 2 p.m. in the Horseshoe Theater. Spring Awakening is a rock musical adaptation of the controversial 1891 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind. Set in late 19th-century Germany, it concerns teenagers struggling with the changes brought by their awakening sexuality. The Broadway production of this show received eight 2007 Tony Awards, including best musical, direction, book, score and featured actor. The show also won four Drama Desk Awards, while its London production won four Olivier Awards. This production is directed by LAVC Professor Cathy Pyles. The LAVC Study Away Program will hold its first information session for its 2012 Summer in Paris Program on Saturday, November 19 from 12 noon-2 p.m. in the Foreign Language 102. Come learn about the month-long study program with ESA (European Studies Association), which will take place from July 1-31, 2012. Participants can earn up to 8 units of credit at LAVC. Want to Study in Spain this Summer?
LAVC Study Away Program will hold an information session for its Summer 2012 Spanish Language Program in Spain on Wednesday, November 16 from 1-2 p.m. in Foreign Language 104. The program to Alicante, Spain will be held from June 27-July 28. Students can gain 5 units of transferrable credit, and all language classes will be taught at the Universidad de Alicante. The program includes a two-day visit to Madrid, a day visit to Valencia, and cultural and educational visits around Alicante. LAVC Celebrates Academic Achievement at the Fall 2011 Dean's Reception
The LAVC Associated Student Union and Tau Alpha Epsilon will celebrate the academic success of students at the Fall 2011 Dean's Reception on Monday, November 14 from 1 p.m. in Monarch Hall. This semiannual event recognizes outstanding students who have made the Dean's List and President's Honor's List as of the Spring 2011 semester. Students selected to the Dean's List are full-time students with at least a 3.5 GPA in 12 or more units at LAVC, or part-time students with at least a 3.5 GPA in 6-11 units who have completed more than 12 cumulative units at LAVC. Students who have been on the Dean's List for three consecutive semesters are selected to be on the President's Honor's List. In addition, all students with a 3.5 GPA or higher are eligible to be a member of the Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor society for 2-year colleges, and Tau Alpha Epsilon, LAVC's honor society. Association of Fundraising Professionals Recognizes Sue Carleo, Diedra Stark, and Bob Oberstein at 2011 National Philanthropy Day

Bob Oberstein were recently recognized as medallion recipients at the Association of Fundraising Professionals/Greater San Fernando Valley Chapter's 2011 National Philanthropy Day. Medallions of honor were given to the recipients in recognition of their contributions to philanthropy. National Philanthropy Day recognizes the profound impact that philanthropy has on the fabric of society. Each year, the AFC honors individuals and groups who, through their hard work and dedication, have enhanced philanthropy, their communities and the world. At this year's event, the AFC also recognized LAVC Alumnus Paul Sabolic as the "Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year", and LAVC Foundation Director Raul Castillo as the "Outstanding Professional of the Year". Congratulations!

Associate Professor Jackie Hams Teaches Oceanography Course from Indian Ocean
Jacquelyn "Jackie" Hams, associate professor of oceanography at LAVC, will be a "teacher at sea" as she participates in a month-long research trip to study ocean-atmospheric interactions in the equatorial Indian Ocean. From November through mid-December, she will work with scientists from 13 different countries in Project DYNAMO, which will study the Madden-Julian Oscillation—a 30-90 day tropical weather cycle that starts over the equatorial Indian Ocean and moves eastward into the western Pacific Ocean where it impacts other worldwide global weather and climate patterns. Jackie is on the third leg of a research cruise aboard the R/V Roger Revelle in the eastern Indian Ocean. During her trip, her Oceanography and Geology students will be able to follow her journey and complete online assignments related to her research trip. Jackie's participation is possible thanks to funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). You're Invited to the Opening Reception for the LAVC Art Gallery's Latest Exhibition "Dane Picard, Selected Works"
The LAVC Art Gallery will present an opening reception for its latest exhibition entitled "Dane Picard, Selected Works" on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. The exhibition, which runs from November 9-December 15, comprises of 37 selected works by Dane Picard and focuses on the last ten years of the artist's unique process in digital media. Picard has been working with digital media since the 1980s, experimenting with early computer and animation software. He produces artwork that is a nuanced understanding of how the computer and technology impact contemporary cultural habits and attitudes, which is connected to his interest in how people receive, process, and filter constant visual information. During the exhibition, the LAVC Art Gallery will be open Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Parking is available for the general public in Parking Lot B and C. LAVC to Receive a CCFC Professional Design Award of Honor for the to-be-built Monarch Center
LAVC and the McCarthy/LPA Design-Build team will be the recipients of an "award of honor" by the Community College Facility Coalition's (CCFC) Professional Design Award Program for the newly designed LAVC Monarch Center and Parking Structure project. The award ceremony will take place on November 1 in Sacramento. The new Monarch Center and Parking Structure is the first design-build project at LAVC, and will be located in location of the current Cafeteria and Softball Field. Raul Castillo, Paul Sabolic and the Van Nuys Women's Club to be Recognized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals
The Greater San Fernando Valley Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals will be honoring LAVC Foundation Director Raul Castillo as the "Outstanding Professional of the Year" and LAVC Alumnus Paul Sabolic as the "Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year" at its 2011 National Philanthropy Day Award Recipients. In addition, the Van Nuys Women's Club, which was nominated by the LAVC Foundation, will be honored as the "Outstanding Foundation of the Year". All the recipients will be honored as the 2011 National Philanthropy Day Celebration and Awards Luncheon to be held on November 1 in Sherman Oaks. Congratulations!

The recently redesigned LAVC homepage features a "search" button at the top of the page to enable people to more easily find a specific department's, program's or service's Web page. Just simply type in what you are looking for in the search field, and it will give you the link on the LAVC Web site. Faculty, staff, students and visitors can also use the handy groupings of frequently used links based on who is looking at the site—new students, current students, faculty/staff, alumni and friends, and visitors.

LAVC's Manuscript 47 Now Available Online
The new issue of Manuscript 47, LAVC's annual literary e-magazine, has been posted online. Manuscript 47 features fiction and poetry writing exclusively by LAVC students. This new issue was put together in Spring and Summer 2011 by students in English 127, Creative Writing, and their instructor, Rod Moore. LAVC Receives a $4.35 Million Grant to Help Students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
Los Angeles Valley College was recently awarded a Title III Accelerated Pathways to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and Articulation Program Grant for Hispanic Serving Institutions from the U.S. Department of Education.This development grant, which awards a total of $4.35 million over five years, is focused on increasing the number of Hispanic and other low-income students attaining degrees in math-related subjects. The overall objectives of the grant are: to decrease student time in the mathematics pipeline, to increase student interest, success and confidence in math and STEM-related fields, to develop model articulation agreements with our primary transfer institutions, and to use high quality, timely data to improve participant outcomes in order to increase enrollments and completion in STEM degrees and transfer to four-year institutions. The grant was written by S. Khalad Hussain, Sheri Berger, Theresa Sutcliff, Steve Castillo, Luz Shin, Kala Iyer and Mary Hito. Congratulations!

Want to Earn Up to $13.25 Per Hour? Project GRAD at LAVC is Hiring!
LAVC in partnership with Project GRAD LA is hiring tutors for the following LAUSD Schools: Pacoima, San Fernando, Maclay, and Olive Vista Middle Schools. Tutors will earn between $11.04-$13.25 per hour. To be eligible to be a tutor, students must be attending college full-time (at least 12 units) with a minimum GPA of 3.0. LAVC to Offer a GED Practice Test on November 4
The LAVC CalWORKs Office will offer a GED (General Educational Development) Practice Test on November 4 from 8:45 a.m. - 12 noon; the cost of the practice test is $10. The practice test is open to the public (no appointment necessary), and the additional practice test dates are November 4, December 2, 9 and 16. As an official GED Testing Site, the LAVC CalWORKs Office also offers the GED Test throughout the year. The next GED Test will be offered on Friday, November 18 from 12 noon - 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, November 19 from 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Registration for that test date will be open starting on November 7 at the CalWORKs Office in Bungalow 14. The GED testing fee is $150 and the partial re-test fee is $35 per subject; all fees must be paid at the time of registration. Space is limited. Dennis Reed to Speak at Tacoma Art Gallery
Dennis Reed, dean of Fine and Performing Arts at LAVC, has been invited to speak about "Independent & Daring: Women Photographers of the West Coast, 1900-1965" at the Tacoma Art Gallery in Tacoma, Washington. His talk will focus on a few of the most notable women photographers during the first half of the 20th Century, including Virna Haffer and some of her West Coast contemporaries, and the interesting bodies of work they produced while living self-sufficient lives that were sometimes unconventional. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in partnership with the LAVC Citizenship Center will provide a free naturalization information session for legal permanent residents and interested naturalization applicants on Tuesday, September 27 from 10-11:30 a.m. and 11:30 am-1 p.m. in Monarch Hall. Topics covered at each session will include the naturalization process, the naturalization test, rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship, and a mock naturalization interview. LAVC to Hold a STARS Workshop on "Preventing Academic Dishonesty"
The LAVC Strategic Team for the Advancement and Retention of Students (STARS) will hold a "Preventing Academic Dishonesty" workshop for faculty, staff and students on Monday, September 26 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the Fireside Room. This first STARS event of the Fall semester will examine the underlying causes of cheating and plagiarism, and the strategies that work to overcome this obstacle to learning. Former LAVC TAP Student Receives a UCLA Scholarship
Eleanor Karen Ryngler, a former LAVC TAP (Transfer Alliance Program) student who recently transferred to UCLA, has been named as a Wasserman TAP Scholar at UCLA for the 2011-2012 academic year. Transfer students who are selected as TAP Scholars are entitled to an academic scholarship of at least $5,000 per year. The scholarship is renewable for a second year of the student has achieved a UCLA GPA of at least 3.0 (B average), completed 45 units (by Fall 2012), and have participated in or committed to participating in undergraduate research or an off-campus internship. Ronald Reis Publishes a New Book on the Great Depression and the New Deal
Ronald “Ron” Reis, chair of the LAVC Technology Department, has recently published a new book entitled The Great Depression and the New Deal. This book, which is part of a history set by Chelsea House Publishing, is written for young adults and is earmarked for junior and senior high schools around the country. Other books by Ron Reis include The Dust Bowl, The World Trade Organization, Sitting Bull, and Ted Williams. Congratulations!

LAVC will offer the GED (General Educational Development) Test on September 16-17. Registration for the test begins 2 weeks prior to the test, and space is limited. All test takers must have a valid form of identification at registration. The GED testing fee is $150 and the partial re-test fee is $35 per subject; all fees must be paid at the time of registration. LAVC Launches PASS to Help Improve Student Success
At Opening Day, LAVC announced the start of a new campus-wide initiative called PASS (Preparing All Students for Success). To help strengthen our strategies to improve student success, faculty, staff, administrators and students across the campus will work more closely together towards the shared goal. Earlier this year, LAVC and the rest of the Los Angeles Community College District were selected to participate in a national consortium of 190-member colleges called Achieving the Dream (ATD). Using the toolbox provided by ATD, LAVC will begin to start using data more effectively to help close the achievement gaps and improve student outcomes. Over the next couple of months, more information about PASS will be shared with the campus.

LAVC Foundation Skills is offering an new accelerated Math series for students who have placed in Math 105 that will allow them to be prepared to take college-level math in only one year (two semesters). Parking Lot D Reopens on August 22, and Parking Lot A Reopens on August 25
Parking Lot D will open for student and staff parking on Monday, August 22; Parking Lot A is scheduled to be reopen on Thursday, August 25. Both lots were closed for several months to make needed improvements to those parking areas. Parking Lot D was temporarily closed in the Spring and Summer to enable the installation of new parking stalls with new photovoltaic panels, and for repaving and restriping the parking area. Parking Lot A was renovated to make improvements to the traffic flow in the lot, add additional parking spaces, create a new pedestrian walkway to the Metro stop on Fulton Avenue and Burbank Boulevard, and to install new parking lot lighting and new blue light emergency phone stations to ensure safety on campus. Anthropology Department Selects Rebecca Stein as its New Department Chair
Rebecca Stein has been elected as the department chair for the new Anthropology Department. As department chair, Rebecca will oversee the department’s course offerings, faculty and budget. The Anthropology Department is focusing this year on instituting improvements based on course assessment results, growing its online offerings, and continuing to integrate the use of new technology, tools and specimens into the human evolution lecture and laboratory courses. William Wallis Publishes a New Book and Has Accepted Editorial Duties for Two
Regional Publications
William Wallis, professor of English at LAVC, has recently published a new book titled Images, and has accepted editorial duties for Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies and West Magazine. His new book Images, which features his daughter’s photography along with his poetry, was published by Lone Wolf Editions in July 2011. William also sits on the editorial board for Shofar, the official journal of the Midwest and Western Jewish Studies Association, and works with Editor Zev Garber, professor emeritus of Jewish Studies at LAVC, to vote on issues related to the quarterly publication. In addition, he has evaluated full-length submissions at Purdue University Press, and recently recommended that a new volume on contemporary Klezmer Music in Europe be accepted for publication in the Shofar Publications Series. He may also edit a volume on Music and Song Literature of the Sefardim. At West Magazine, William assists Chief Editor Nuala Linke-Ivic, who is formerly of the LAVC English Department and now works at West Los Angeles College, with selecting poetry submissions for publication, and has a column of poetry which appears in each issue.

LAVC faculty members Eric Swelstad (Media Arts), Arantxa Rodriguez (Media Arts), William Wallis (English), Alfred Zucker (English), Abraham Hoffman (History), Nathan Palencia (Philosophy), Cynthia Travelbee (Psychology) and Art Cherdack (Psychology) are mentoring interns who are interested in teaching at the community college-level through the Project MATCH (Mentors Act To Change History) Program. This instructional development program coordinated by the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) prepares and recruits prospective faculty members who meet certain criteria by providing him/her with a valuable internship/mentoring opportunity with current faculty members. Each intern is assigned a mentor that matches his/her particular subject area, will be assigned to work with the mentor to teach a 3-unit class, and will have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the various responsibilities of faculty. By participating in this program, it may lead to a career as a full-time community college instructor, counselor or librarian for the interns.

John Milligan Selected to be a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry
John Milligan, department chair of Chemistry/Physics, has been recently selected to be a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry. As of July 1, Barbara Goldberg is serving as the new chair of the LAVC Counseling Department. Attention Campus Community!! Don't Forget About the Closure of Interstate 405 from July 16-17
From July 16-17, Interstate 405 between the Interstate 10 and the 101 Freeway will be closed; the I-405 freeway will reopen on Monday, July 18, 2011 at 5 a.m., and all ramps and connectors will be reopened by 6 a.m. This stretch of I-405 is being closed to enable the demolition of the Mulholland Bridge as part of the Interstate 405 widening project. To help ease traffic during this time, Metro has information available on alternate travel routes from the Westside to the Valley, and will be offering special transit service, which includes extra buses on major Westside and Valley streets, free fare on Red, Purple and Orange and selected bus lines, and added Metrolink trains. Five Students in the Math Department Received Scholarships
The Math Department congratulates its five scholarship recipients who were honored at the department luncheon on June 3 at The Odyssey. The Math Department awarded four departmental scholarships, and three foundation scholarships. LAVC is now an Official GED Testing Center
Los Angeles Valley College is pleased to announce our newly approved Official GED Testing Center. CalWORKs will offer the Official GED Test (starting in the Fall 2011 semester) once every month except in December. Testing is available on-campus to all students and members of the community. CalWORKs also offers free practice testing for the GED every Friday. For more than sixty years, the GED Tests have broadened the educational, professional, and personal opportunities of millions of adults who were not able to complete their formal high school education. LAVC Speech Team Named as an Honoree for the Steve Allen Excellence in Education Award
The Valley Economic Alliance recently selected the LAVC Speech Team as an honoree for the 2011 Steve Allen Excellence in Education Award. The team was recognized for winning a Team Gold Medal at the 2011 Phi Rho Pi, National Public Speaking Championship Tournament. The LACCD Metro Pass Program is being discontinued due to the fact that the funding for the program has ended. There are no current plans to continue with I-TAP program on any of the nine LACCD campuses, including LAVC. LAVC announces that the only classes to be offered this summer will be those that are part of special or year-round programs. Enrollment in summer classes will be extremely limited, and only students who are eligible to take those special or year-round program classes will be given an add card directly from the instructor. Zev Garber Recently Featured in Panel Discussion at Purdue University
Zev Garber, professor emeritus of Jewish Studies at LAVC, recently was invited to speak at a panel discussion at Purdue University, which was held in celebration of the launch of his latest book entitled “The Jewish Jesus: Revelation, Reflection, Reclamation.” This new book is a collection of essays that cover the historical, literary, liturgical, philosophical, religious, theological and contemporary issues related to the Jewish Jesus. Richard Kahn Publishes a New Music Textbook
Richard Kahn, assistant professor of music, has recently published a textbook entitled "Fundamentals of Music, a Modern Approach" by publishing giant Kendall-Hunt. Construction Update on the Current Renovations to Parking Lot A
Since April 2011, Parking Lot A and half of College Road South has been closed for renovations. Students, faculty and staff who look at the lot today will see that the pavement has been removed in preparation for the upcoming improvements to the lot. This exhibition consists of over 100 vintage photographs created between 1895 and 1988 by eighteen renowned photographers. All of the prints are drawn from the private collection of Michael R. LAVC Career/Transfer Center Presents the Spring 2011 Career Speaker Workshop Series
The LAVC Career/Transfer Center will offer a series of “Career Speaker Workshops” on Tuesdays (between March 15-May 10) from 1-2:30 p.m. in the Foreign Language Building, Room 102. These workshops for the Spring 2011 semester will focus on specific groupings of careers, and students will be able to hear from professionals working in those fields. The following workshops will be offered: “Careers in Education” on March 15, “Careers in Business” on March 22, “Careers in Healthcare” on March 29, “Careers in Law” on April 5, “Careers in Green Careers” on April 12, “Careers in Human Services” on May 3 and “Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math” on May 10. Learn How to Make Good Food Choices at the Nutrition Workshop on May 11
The LAVC Student Health Center will offer an nutrition workshop entitled “Make Good Food Choices: No Matter Where You Choose to Eat” on Wednesday, May 11 from 11 a.m.-12 noon in the Student Services Center, Multipurpose Room. Nutrition students from CSUN will share pointers on how to make good food choices. This workshop is open to students, faculty, and staff.
