Are You Looking for a Job? Come to the LA Fellows Orientation and Learn How to Set Yourself Apart from Other Job Seekers
The LAVC Job Training Program invites unemployed men and women to an orientation session for the final class of the LA Fellows program on Wednesday, May 11 at 10 a.m. in the Faculty Lounge. The LA Fellows program, which is funded through a grant by the City of Los Angeles, provides unemployed individuals with free training and volunteer opportunities while they seek full-time positions. Selected participants will acquire new skill sets, encounter countless opportunities to network with professionals, and project a marketable career candidate impression while presenting a community-focused image. LA Fellows participants will be selected through an application and interview process. They will receive seven weeks of training at LAVC covering executive-level topics including critical thinking, advanced job search skills, and how to generate effective business leads. In return, participants will volunteer their time and talents by sharing their professional expertise through project based roles at local nonprofits. LAVC Students to Hold a “Rally in the Valley” on May 10
The Political Action Coalition student club at LAVC will be holding a “Rally in the Valley” on Tuesday, May 10 from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Monarch Square. This event will bring together students, faculty, staff, administration and community members to address ways in which education at Valley College has been impacted by state budget cuts. There will additionally be a march on campus. It will also be an opportunity to educate the public about the important services that Valley College provides to the community and the ways in which all of these services are being threatened by budget cuts. Help Save a Life—Two Different Ways! You’re Invited to the LAVC Blood Drive and LAVC Bone Marrow Registry Drive on May 9
The LAVC Student Health Center and the American Red Cross will hold a “LAVC Blood Drive” and a “LAVC Bone Marrow Registry Drive” on Monday, May 9 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in Monarch Hall. The campus community will have two ways to help save a life—on the same day, at the same location. At the LAVC Blood Drive, all blood donors will receive 2 tickets to the Laugh Factory, and will be entered in a “Get Fit for Summer” drawing. The LAVC Bone Marrow Registry Drive will allow people to join the National Bone Marrow Registry and/or donate funds to help patients afford transplant, find a matching donor and build a future as we advance medical research. All bone marrow donors need to be between the ages of 18-60, and must be willing to donate to any patient in need and meet the health guidelines. LAVC to Hold a Mega Counseling Event Starting May 2
The Counseling Department will offer immediate advisement services for LAVC students from May 2-6; appointments are available in 15-minute increments from Monday, May 2-Thursday, May 5 between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m., and Friday, May 6 between 8 a.m.-1 p.m. During the entire week, counselors will be providing academic counseling for Fall enrollment for students. Academic counseling will help them plan ahead due to reduced class offerings, budget restrictions impacting college services and transfer restrictions/limitations. Students are encouraged to schedule a 15-minute appointment, and the Counseling Department will make every effort to accommodate walk-ins when possible. Attention Students! Starting Fall 2011 the Enrollment Fee is $36 Per Unit
LAVC recently announced that the enrollment fee will be $36 per unit starting in the Fall 2011 semester. Governor Jerry Brown recently signed the bill SB 70 into law, which sets the enrollment fee for community college students to $36 per unit. This fee will be effective starting the Fall 2011 semester at all California community colleges. Financial Aid is available for those who qualify. Want to Earn $11.04-$13.25 per Hour? Project GRAD is Looking for Student Tutors at LAVC
LAVC in partnership with Project GRAD LA is hiring tutors for the following LAUSD Schools: Pacoima Middle School, San Fernando Middle School, Maclay Middle School, and San Fernando High School. Tutors will earn between $11.04-$13.25 per hour. To be eligible to be a tutor, students must be attending college full-time (at least 12 units) with a minimum GPA of 3.0. LAVC Speech Team Ranked as Best Team in the U.S. at the National Speech Championship
The LAVC Speech Team claimed the National Championship Team Gold Medal for a 3rd time—in the past 4 years—at the 2011 Phi Rho Pi, National Public Speaking Championship Tournament in Greenwich, Connecticut on April 12-16. The team competed with 53 other community colleges, and over 500 students from all across the United States. They earned a total of 8 gold medals, 4 silver medals, and 6 bronze medals. The following awards were earned by the individual members of the team: gold medals in Duo Interpretation of Literature (TJ Rosas and LD Green); gold medal in Poetry (Karen Yelverton); gold medals in Readers Theater (Cristina Leiva, Rick Magana, Daniel Caceres, and Kathy Martinez); gold medal in Drama (Karen Bagoumian); silver medal in Programmed Oral Interpretation of Literature (Karen Yelverton); silver medals in Readers Theater (Karen Yelverton, Gilma Perez, Michelle Peery, and Karen Bagoumian); silver medal in Prose (Daniel Caceres); bronze medal in Drama (TJ Rosas); bronze medal in Communication Analysis (Gilma Perez); bronze medal in Informative Speaking (Rick Magana); bronze medals in Prose (Karen Bagoumian and Christen Gerhart); bronze medal in Speech to Entertain (Christen Gerhart). Other members of the winning team include John Hooper and Albert Pugliese. The team coaches were Duane Smith, director of the Speech Team, Joshua Miller, chair of the Speech Department, Eric Cullather, faculty coach in the Speech Department, Lecoya Lejeune, volunteer coach, and Robyn Jackson, volunteer coach. Congratulations to everyone on the Speech Team!

Tom Jacobsmeyer Selected as a SFV Business Journal’s CFO Awards Nominee
Thomas Jacobsmeyer, vice president of administrative services at LAVC, has been selected as a 2011 nominee for the San Fernando Valley Business Journal’s 4th Annual CFO Awards. This awards ceremony recognizes the important work of CFOs (Chief Financial Officers) as financial stewards in the public and private sectors. New Exhibition at the LAVC Art Gallery– “A Fine Day’s Work: Photographs from the Michael R. Whalen Collection”
The LAVC Art Gallery and Arts Council presents its latest exhibition entitled “A Fine Day’s Work: Photographs from the Michael R. Whalen Collection” from April 5-May 12. This exhibition consists of over 100 vintage photographs created between 1895 and 1988 by eighteen renowned photographers. All of the prints are drawn from the private collection of Michael R. Whalen, which uniquely features all the photographs by an artist taken during a single photographic session. Included are works by Richard Avedon, Ruth Bernhard, Ilse Bing, Margaret Bourke-White, Josef Breitenbach, Ralston Crawford, Imogen Cunningham, Harold Edgerton, Helen Levitt, Ralph Meatyard, Hansel Mieth, Lisette Model, Alexander Rodchenko, Aaron Siskind, Karl Struss, Jerry Uelsmann, Adam Clark Vroman and Weegee. The exhibit is free to the public. The Art Gallery is open Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 6-9 p.m.; it will be closed from April 18-25 for Spring Break. LAVC Receives a Team Fundraising Award from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
Los Angeles Valley College was given the Silver Team award for fundraising a total of $7,000 to help The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society last year. In October 2010, Valley College staff participated in the “Light the Night Walk” at Warner Center in Woodland Hills. LAVC will participate in the walk again this year, and will be having several fundraising events through out the year. This year, LAVC hired three faculty members to assist departments with awareness and assessment of Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) for Accreditation. Raise Awareness of Sexual Assaults by Wearing Jeans on April 27 for Denim Day 2011
The LAVC Student Health Center and H.A.R.T. Advisory Team will be holding “Denim Day” at LAVC on Wednesday, April 27 in honor of April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month. All faculty, staff and students are encouraged to wear denim jeans to help raise awareness of sexual assault. Demin Day is part of a “sexual violence prevention and education campaign” to remind everyone that there is no excuse and there is never an invitation to rape! This year’s event, which also takes place throughout the state of California, is co-sponsored by the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CALCASA) and the California Legislative Women’s Caucus. LAVC will Raise Awareness and Funds for Community Colleges by Participating in “Hands Across California” on April 17
LAVC students, faculty, staff and friends will join hands together to show support of community colleges and to raise funds on Sunday, April 17. In addition, LAVC is collecting donations to fund scholarships for LAVC students (with the Bernard Osher Foundation giving 50% more in a matching donation to create a permanent student scholarship). This monumental once-in-a-generation event, which is being coordinated by the Foundation for California Community College in partnership with Ken Kragen (the mastermind behind Hands Across America), will create a 1,500-mile line with 1.5 million community college students, faculty, staff, alumni and supporters in a vast statewide line that will stretch from San Diego to above Sacramento—literally uniting nearly all of the 112 community colleges in California. To participate, simply register to stand in line (by clicking “Get Started”) and/or donate to help raise funds that will fund scholarships for Valley College students. LAVC to Host the 2nd Annual LACCD Philosophy Conference
The 2nd Annual LACCD Philosophy Conference will be held at LAVC on Friday, April 15 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in Monarch Hall. The event is being sponsored by the LAVC Philosophy/Economics Department. The keynote speaker will be Rob Gressis, assistant professor of Philosophy at Cal State Northridge, and the plenary speaker will be Zev Garber, professor emeritus of Jewish Studies at LAVC. Professor Garber will speak on a philosophical-mystical take on the Jewish Jesus to acknowledge the publication of his new edited volume, The Jewish Jesus: Revelation, Reflection, Reclamation. H. Dennis and Anne Beaver Foundation Awards an LAVC Student with an All-Expenses-Paid Trip to Study in the South of France This Summer
The H. Dennis and Anne Beaver Foundation has selected Krystle Ramos, an LAVC student, to receive an all-expenses paid trip to participate in LAVC’s Study Abroad Program to Montpellier, France. The H. Dennis and Anne Beaver Foundation selects one or two LAVC and/or CSUN students to receive an extraordinary scholarship to study in France. For several years, Dennis Beaver, who is an LAVC alumnus, and his foundation have encouraged foreign language study at the high school and university level, by sending gifted, financially deserving, and highly motivated students to France. The scholarship that Krystal is receiving will cover all trip expenses, including travel, room and board, tuition and a modest weekly allowance to cover some meals and incidentals. During her trip, she will stay with a host family and will study advanced language courses at the ILP (Institut Linguistique du Peyrou) in Montpellier, France. Krystle is transferring to CSUN as a linguistics major with a minor in French, and is currently enrolled in LAVC’s French 5/6. LAVC would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Beaver for their continued generosity and support of the Study Away program here at Valley. Congratulations Krystle!

Opening Reception for the New LAVC Art Gallery Exhibition – "A Fine Day’s Work: Photographs from the Michael R. Whalen Collection"
The LAVC Art Gallery and Arts Council will hold an opening reception for its new exhibition entitled “A Fine Day’s Work: Photographs from the Michael R. Whalen Collection” on Tuesday, April 5 at 7 p.m. in the Art Gallery. Immediately following the reception, a discussion with Michael R. Whalen, and dealer, collector and author Stephen White will be held at 8 p.m. in the Art Building, Room 103. This exhibition consists of over 100 vintage photographs created between 1895 and 1988 by eighteen renowned photographers. All of the prints are drawn from the private collection of Michael R. Whalen, which uniquely features all the photographs by an artist taken during a single photographic session. The exhibition will run from April 5-May 12, and is open Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 6-9 p.m.; it will be closed from April 18-25 for Spring Break. All events are free to the public. LAVC Speech Team Wins at California State Championships
LAVC Speech Team was named as best in the state in three categories at the California Community College Forensic Association State Championship in Woodland Hills from March 16-20. Earning a gold and a “Lowest Cumulative Score” rating at the competition, Gregory Pugliese was named best in the state in the Informative Speaking category, L.D. Green was named best in the state in the Dramatic Interpretation category, and L.D. Green and T.J. Rosas were named best in the state in the Duo Interpretation category. In addition, the following awards were earned by the team: Gold – Informative (Gregory Pugliese); Gold – Duo Interpretation (L.D. Green and T.J. Rosas); Gold – Dramatic Interpretation (L.D. Green); Silver – Poetry (L.D. Green, Karen Yelverton); Silver – Persuasive (Gilma Perez); Silver – Program Oral Interpretation (Karen Yelverton); Bronze – Informative (Gilma Perez); Bronze – After-Dinner Speech (Karen Yelverton); Bronze – Interpreter’s Theater with a performance of “Band of Sisters” script compiled by Josh Miller (Karen Yelverton, Michelle Peery, Karen Bagoumian, and Gilma Perez). LAVC’s Performing & Media Arts Center Receives an American Institute of Architects (AIA) Design Award
The San Fernando Valley Chapter of the America Institute of Architects (AIA) awarded a 2010 Design Excellence Merit Award to Erhlich Architects and LAVC for the design of the new Performing & Media Arts Center (formerly known as the Media Arts and Performing Arts Center). The award was presented to representatives of Ehrlich Architects and LAVC President Dr. Sue Carleo. The Center, which is one of the first projects that is being funded by Measure J, brings together the Media Arts Department and the Performing Arts Department into a single complex—for a more collaborative learning environment. It will feature classrooms, study and rehearsal spaces, a newsroom and radio station, faculty offices, and four separate theaters—a 450-seat Mainstage Theater, a 225-seat Screening Theater, a 150-seat Horseshoe Theater, and an 80-seat Lab Theater. In addition, there will be an Outdoor Amphitheater for outdoor performances and concerts. Congratulations!

Calling All Philosophy Students! Do You Want to Present a Paper at the LACCD Philosophy Conference?
The LAVC Philosophy/Economics Department reminds all student that the deadline to submit a paper for the upcoming 2nd Annual LACCD Philosophy Conference is April 1. To submit a paper, simply select a topic of your own interest from any area of philosophy and then write a paper on that topic. Send an abstract of one to two pages to any of the conference organizers for review by Friday, April 1. You may also submit a paper that you have already written and one that was well received by your professor. If your essay is accepted, then you will be given a 15 minute period to present the essay. LAVC Celebrates Students’ Academic Achievement at the Spring 2011 Dean’s Reception
The LAVC Associated Student Union will celebrate the academic success of students at the Spring 2011 Dean’s Reception on Monday, March 21 from 1-2:30 p.m. in Monarch Hall. This semi-annual event recognizes outstanding students who have made the Dean’s List (full-time students with at least a 3.5 GPA in 12 or more units at LAVC, or part-time students with at a least 3.5 GPA in 6-11 units who have completed more than 12 cumulative units at LAVC) and President’s Honor’s List (students who have been on the Dean’s List for three consecutive semesters) in the Spring 2011 semester. The LAVC Foundation would like to remind all students that the deadline to apply for a majority of its scholarships is fast approaching on Friday, March 18. This year, the LAVC Foundation will be awarding over $100,000 in scholarships, and recipients will be notified just before the Fall 2011 semester begins. To be eligible, students must be registered and enrolled for the Spring 2011 semester. Criteria for scholarships vary, so a member of the Foundation staff will assist students in selecting applications they qualify for. LAVC Joins Achieving the Dream and Commits to Improving Student Success and Completion
Los Angeles Valley College is one of thirty community colleges nationwide selected for the 2011 Achieving the Dream Cohort. Job Training is Looking for Unemployed Men and Women to Join its LA Fellows Program
LAVC Job Training is searching for unemployed men and women for the third class of the LA Fellows program. Interested participants should attend an orientation session on Wednesday, March 9 at 1 p.m. in the Cafeteria Conference Room. The LA Fellows program will provide unemployed individuals with skills training and volunteer opportunities while they seek full-time positions. Participants will be selected through an application and interview process. They will receive seven weeks of training at Los Angeles Valley College covering executive level topics including critical thinking, advanced job search skills, and how to generate effective business leads. In return, participants will volunteer their time and talents by sharing their professional expertise through project based roles at local nonprofits. The LA Fellows participants will acquire new skill sets, encounter countless opportunities to network with professionals, and project a marketable career candidate impression while presenting a community-focused image. Need a Ride? I-TAP Metro Passes Available for Purchase in the Business Office
Beginning February 7, LAVC students can purchase a Spring 2011 I-TAP Metro Pass for only $15 in the Business Office. To be eligible, LAVC students must be enrolled in 12 or more units during the semester to receive the special $15 price. Congratulations to Our New Distance Education Coordinator
Syed “Khaled” Hussain was recently selected as LAVC’s new Distance Education Coordinator. Khaled will be responsible for continuing to expand the college’s distance education program. He will work with faculty and students to promote distance education, develop online courses and instructional materials, and provide operational support to faculty and staff who use the college’s Etudes course management system to teach online or hybrid courses. He will also assist faculty with ordering their “shells” for online/hybrid courses, troubleshoot problems with “shells”, and help the Distance Education Trainer with developing training. Zev Garber Recognized in the Journal of the National Association of Professors of Hebrew
Zev Garber, professor emeritus of Jewish Studies at LAVC, has been recently recognized in Hebrew Studies, the Journal of the National Association of Professors of Hebrew, which published several essays on the critical contributions he has made to the field of Jewish Studies. Entitled “A Symposium on the Work of Zev Garber: Reviews of Maven in Blue Jeans”, the essays were originally presented at a joint session meeting of the Western Jewish Studies Association on March 14, 2010. This symposium analyzed Garber’s work in relation to the 2009 book, Maven in Blue Jeans: A Festschrift in Honor of Zev Garber, a collection of essays honoring him, and includes a response from Zev Garber. Mark Your Calendars—Spring 2011 LAVC Music Department Concert Series Begins on February 12
The LAVC Music Department invites the campus community to its Spring 2011 Concert Series. Every semester, the Music Department features a variety of instrumental and choral performances. The Spring 2011 season kicks off on Saturday, February 12 with a guitar concert by the American Guitar Society. Other upcoming performances include a Valley Symphony Orchestra Chamber Music Concert on Sunday, February 13, and a concert by the Avon String Quintet. Doug Marriott Named the Director of Cooperative Education
Doug Marriott from Job Training has been selected as the new Director for Cooperative Education at LAVC. Cooperative Education establishes a three-way partnership between the student, the college and the employer to help students prepare for their future careers. As the director, he will be responsible for overseeing the Cooperative Education program, visiting with area employers, and partnering with Job Training to further meet the needs of local employers. California MEDiA Arts CTE Statewide Program Receives Renewed Funding
The CALIFORNIA MEDiA ARTS Statewide Career Technical Education (CTE) Program, based at Los Angeles Valley College, has officially been renewed for 2011-2012. The program partners with the following five local organizations to provide career opportunities to students: the Institute for Developing Entertainment Arts and Studies (IDEAS) Center at LAVC, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the Entertainment Economy Institute, the Acme Network, and the Mary Pickford Institute. The IDEAS Center at LAVC (www.lavc.edu/ideas) is the regional EWD Center, which supplies workshops and career training. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (www.emmysfoundation.org) is a partner in California MEDiA’s career networking, internship and Meet The Pros events. The Entertainment Economy Institute (www.entertainmentecon.org) supplies detailed information on industry conferences, training and competitions. The Acme Network (www.acmenetwork.org) is the number one training service for animators in California. The Mary Pickford Institute (www.marypickford.com), in addition to its respected archive and creative programming, provides state of the art mobile film classrooms, for on-site instruction and career exploration, to thousands of students and faculty in middle schools. The program director is Daniel J. Nyiri, LAVC Media Arts faculty member since 2004, who originated the program as a regional project in 2006 and took it statewide in 2009. Congratulations!

Valley College Comes Together to Donate to the MEND Food Bank
LAVC faculty and staff recently donated $350 and a 50-gallon tub full of non-perishable food to help the MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity) Food Bank in Pacoima. At the annual LAVC Holiday Party, guests were asked to donate food or fund to help this local non-profit who helps those who are less fortunate in the San Fernando Valley. MEND would like to thank everyone in the campus community who made a contribution.

LAVC Speech Team Wins More Awards at the PSCFA Fall Championship
The LAVC Speech Team competed in the Pacific Southwest Collegiate Forensics Association (PSCFA) Fall Championship competition at Mt. San Antonio College on December 5. Several LAVC students competed and earned top rank placement: Karen Bagoumian (4th Place – Dramatic Interpretation: Junior), Nora Ellis (7th Place – Dramatic Interpretation: Open), Christen Gerhart (1st Place – Speech to Entertain: Novice), LD Green (2nd Place – Dramatic Interpretation: Open; 6th Place – POI: Open), Michelle Peery (2nd Place – Persuasive: Junior), TJ Rosas (1st Place – Poetry: Open), and Karen Yelverton (1st Place – POI: Open; 2nd Place – Poetry: Open). Dave Mallas Named 2010 Diamond Sports ABCA Coach of the Year
The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) selected Coach Dave Mallas as its 2010 Diamond Sports ABCA Coach of the Year for the Pacific Association Division. Dave will be recognized at the American Baseball Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet on Friday, January 7. Dave has been the head coach of the LAVC Baseball team since 2005. Recently, the LAVC Baseball team was named the 2010 Western State Conference Southern Division champions. Congratulations Coach Mallas!
