 Attention Students! Textbook Buyback at the LAVC Bookstore

The LAVC Bookstore will hold a Textbook Buyback period from February 3-4, and 7-11. Students can get money by selling their used textbooks to the Bookstore. Textbook Buyback will be open Thursday, February 3 from 8 a.m.-7 p.m., Friday, February 4 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday, February 7-Thursday, February 10 from 8 a.m.-7 p.m., and Friday, February 11 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. For more information, visit the LAVC Bookstore in the Campus Center.

 Reminder—Winter Session Final Exams Are On The Last Day of Class.

 Attention Students! What You Can Do If Your Spring Class was Canceled.
With the cancellation of several Spring Semester classes, many students can find alternate ways to find the classes they need. If a student’s class was canceled, he/she has the following options to find an open class: talk with an instructor who is still offering the course to ask for an add card; see a counselor for help with choosing alternative courses; see Department Chair for possible course substitution (if this is your last semester at LAVC); take a course at one of the other colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District; or wait until the course is offered in another semester. LAVC invites its friends and neighbors to learn more about the college’s Master Plan Update and the environmental process at its Community Open House on Tuesday, February 1 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Fireside Room. All participants will have the opportunity to have one-on-one interaction with Master Plan representatives, and to submit formal comments.  Attention Students! LAVC Foundation Scholarship Applications Available Starting January 24

The Los Angeles Valley College Foundation will make its scholarship applications available beginning January 24. Valley College students must be registered and enrolled for the Spring 2011 semester in order to qualify. Over 200 scholarships totaling over $100,000 will be awarded. Criteria for scholarships vary according financial need, merit, area of study and interest to name a few. A member of the Foundation staff will assist students in selecting applications he/she qualifies for. The LAVC Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization and its mission is to serve and support LAVC and its students. It conducts a number of fundraising activities for various campus programs and projects including student scholarships. The Foundation is not to be confused as “The Scholarship Office of LAVC”; students seeking financial assistance should also inquire with the LAVC Financial Aid Office where other scholarship applications may also be available. The LAVC Foundation office hours are generally Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Students interested in applying should visit the Foundation Office located in the Administration Building, Room 100. The deadline for Foundation Scholarships will be on March 18, 2011.

The LAVC Summer Study Program in Montpellier, France will be holding an information session for its Summer 2011 trip on Saturday, January 22 from 12 noon-2 p.m. in the Foreign Language Building, Room 102. Interested participants will learn about the month-long study program from July 2-31, 2011 with the AIFS (American Institute for Foreign Study), and how they can earn up to 8 units of transferrable LAVC credit.  Attention Child Development Majors! New CD Course Offered for Spring 2011
The Child Development Department will offer a new Spring 2011 course entitled Child Development 53 – Parenting on Fridays from 9:40 a.m.-12:50 p.m. in the Child Development & Family Complex, Room 160. This 3-unit course will examine the role of the parent throughout the early stages of child development and provide strategies for supporting a variety of parenting styles and family structures. In addition, students will learn about positive parenting behaviors and explore techniques for fostering positive parent-teacher interactions. The LAVC Family Resource Center has recently launched a new blog on its programs and services. This blog provides students and parents in the community with the latest news regarding the Family Resource Center. The blog now features stories on the CAST Program, the new Parenting 20CE (formerly known as Parent & Baby Sessions), the P-CAT Program, the free baby clothes exchange program, and more. LAVC Family Resource Center Offers Valuable Resources to the Community
The Family Resource Center (FRC), located in Bungalow 49, offers a variety of programs and services to LAVC students, faculty, and staff, and the surrounding community.
The FRC regularly offers free parent and baby sessions (English and Spanish) for parents of birth-30 month babies. Led by Child Development faculty, parents bring their babies for play activities, to meet other new parents, and to participate in lively discussions. The FRC also offers a free baby clothes exchange for sizes newborn to size 3. Parents bring in their used, good condition baby clothes and trade them in for other donated baby clothing. In addition, there is a private lactation room for new mothers to express and refrigerate their milk, a lending library of parenting books, topical parent education meetings, and prenatal support groups, information and related services for the community.  Don’t Miss the Next IDEAS Workshops at LAVC
The IDEAS (Institute for Developing Entertainment & Arts Studies will be offering a three-Saturday Grand Tour workshops for anyone to learn how to use specific software programs.  It will offer a “Photoshop CS5 Grand Tour” workshop, which is a beginners training in Photoshop, on Saturdays, January 15, 22 and 29 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. It will also offer an “Illustrator CS5 Grand Tour” workshop for beginners who want to learn how to use vector-based Illustrator files on Saturdays, January 15, 22 and 29 from 3-7 p.m. The fee is $60 for each three-Saturday workshop. The Institute for Developing Entertainment Arts & Studies is a Regional Center of the Multimedia and Entertainment Initiative, part of the Economic and Workforce Development Program of the California Community Colleges. Professor Emeritus Brenda Ingram-Cotton Receives CBEA’s Honorary State Life Membership

Brenda Ingram-Cotton, professor emeritus in the Computer Applications and Office Technologies (CAOT) department, was recently recognized by the California Business Education Association’s (CBEA) with its Honorary State Life Membership. Brenda was selected by her peers in recognition of her outstanding teaching at the CBEA’s 75th Diamond Jubilee “Focus on the Future” Conference in San Jose at the Fairmont Hotel November 4-7, 2010.  LAVC Job Training Recently Graduated 30 Job Seekers in its Inaugural LA Fellows Class

The LAVC Job Training department recently celebrated the graduation of 30 participants in its inaugural class of its LA Fellows program. Through their participating in the program, four participants have already been offered full-time jobs. The LA Fellows program offered unemployed individuals with skills training and volunteer opportunities while they seek full-time positions. Participants received seven weeks of training at LAVC covering executive-level topics including critical thinking, navigating the hidden job market, and grant writing. In return, participants volunteer their time and talents by sharing their professional expertise through project-based roles at local nonprofits. LAVC Job Training created the LA Fellows Program in partnership with Valley Industry & Commerce Association, City of Los Angeles Community Development Department, The Valley Economic Alliance, Employment Development Department, Los Angeles Valley College Foundation, Los Angeles Community College District, and the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. The fellowship was made possible through funding from the City of Los Angeles Community Development Department through the City of Los Angeles Workforce Investment Board. Congratulations to LAVC Job Training and to all the participants!

Florentino Manzano Named as LAVC’s new Acting Vice President of Student Services
Florentino “Tino” Manzano, dean of enrollment services, has been named as the Acting Vice President of Student Services. He begins his position immediately.
As Acting Vice President of Student Services, he will be sharing ideas and seeking input from the members of the Student Services division and the campus to assure that Valley stays focused on student success. Recently, Tino facilitated the move into the new Student Services Center and Annex, which brought together all 15 students services offices into one centralized location on campus to better serve the needs of students. Congratulations to Tino!

The LAVC Speech Team recently competed at the Watson-Lancer Invitational speech tournament hosted by Pasadena City College.

Family Resource Center Receives a Statewide Competitive Grant
The LAVC Family Resource Center has been awarded a statewide competitive grant through the California Department of Education (Perkins Tech Prep).
The FRC will be running California’s (only) funded demonstration model for a high school early childhood workforce program. It will be working with San Fernando, Panorama and Poly High Schools. Congratulations to the Family Resource Center!

Unfortunately, due to the State budget cutbacks, EOPS could accept a limited number of new students.  LAVC’s TRiO/SSS Program Funded for the Next 5 Years
The TRiO/Student Support Services (TRiO/SSS) program at LAVC is proud to announce that the Department of Education has renewed its funding. The new grant gives the program funding for the next 5 years (2010-2015) to help first-generation, low-income students at LAVC graduate and transfer. The TRiO program provides its students with individual counseling, individual tutoring, academic workshops, cultural activities, transfer information, computer labs, a laptop loan program, and complimentary school supplies.  LAVC Will be Closed for the Winter Break on Selected Dates

LAVC will be closed on December 19, 23-26, 29-31, 2010, and January 1-2, 2011 for the Winter Break. Some offices may be open and/or offer limited services on December 20-22 and 27-28, but visitors should first contact the office directly to see if it will be open. The campus community should be aware that access to most buildings and/or rooms on campus will only be given by making prior arrangements with the Sheriff’s Office. Any staff members who are scheduled to work during those dates must report to Sandy Mayo in the Academic Affairs Office in the Administration Building. Any M&O staff member who is not on vacation should report to the M&O supervisor. The campus will reopen for normal operating hours on Monday, January 3, 2011.

 LA Valley College Night at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills 

The Canyon Club in Agoura Hills will have a “Valley College Night” on Saturday, December 11 starting at 7 p.m. The event will feature a performance by the group Boogie Knights at 10 p.m. A limited number of free tickets to the “Valley College Night” at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills are still available by contacting Dr. Al Cowen at (818) 947-2982.  Tickets can be purchased for $19.50 at the door. EOPS/CARE invites the campus community to “CARE for Kids” this holiday season by donating a gift to the child of a CARE student. The deadline to donate is Friday, December 10. CARE students are low-income single parents taking classes at Los Angeles Valley College. Donations can be made through one of two ways:

  1. Donate $30 to “CARE for Kids” at the LAVC Foundation (Administration) and we will purchase a gift for you OR
  2. Purchase a gift on-line at http://www.target.com/lists/3BO1JTMDX5XWS by Friday, December 10, 2010.  LAVC Art Gallery “Cultural Windows” Exhibition Now Open
The LAVC Art Gallery, and Arts Council will hold an exhibition entitled “Cultural Windows: the Art of Ruth Asawa, Ynez Johnston and Betye Saar” from November 2-December 16. The exhibition features approximately 50 works including sculpture, painting, drawings, prints and ceramics by artists Ruth Asawa, Ynez Johnston and Betye Saar. The cultural references that appear in their work have been derived from personal heritage, ancestry, domestic and foreign cultures, or subcultures that reveal a rich cultural synthesis.  ASU Beach Clean Up Trip to Venice Beach on December 4

The LAVC Associated Student Union is organizing a Beach Clean Up on Saturday, December 4 from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Come give back to your community and help beautify the environment. Participants will clean Venice Beach for about an hour, and lunch will be provided. There will also be fun activities.  LAVC Theater Arts to Present Pete Parkin’s Adaption of A Christmas Carol

The LAVC Theater Arts Department will present an adaptation of A Christmas Carol on Thursdays-Saturdays, December 2, 3, 4, and 9, 10, 11 at 8 p.m. in the Horseshoe Theater. The story circles around a community of drifters who spare a copy of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol from a camp bonfire on one cold winter night. Despite being homeless, freezing, and hungry on Christmas Eve, these vagabonds act out the classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, and discover the true spirit of Christmas. This thrilling adaption by Pete Parkin, former department chair of Theater Arts, has been part of an LAVC tradition since 2002. This production is directed by Marjorie Vander Hoff and features the talents of Nina Donato, William Burton, John Delbarian, Stephanie Pressman, Karis M. Rossi, Tuba Heatherton, Kris Toranzo, Erin O’Loughlin, John F.  Learn How to Make Your Stories Come Alive at the “Storytelling Workshop”
LAVC Professional Development and the Family Resource Center will offer a “Storytelling Workshop” with Judith Heineman on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 from 1-2:30 p.m. in Child Development Family Complex, Room 175. Come explore the art of storytelling in this hands-on workshop. Participants will discover techniques to tell stories, help students and children tell theirs, and actively involve your audience. Judith Heineman is a professional storyteller and actress, who teaches workshops on storytelling for children and adults. Her first CD, Grimm’s Grimmest: The Darker Side of Fairy Tales, won the NAPPA (National Parenting Publication Award). In 2008, she went to China on a storytelling delegation—a chapter on this experience appears in the new edition of Storytelling Art and Technique. She produces the annual “Tellabration! A Worldwide Storytelling Celebration” in Chicago and the “Mohegan Colony Storytelling & Music Festival” in Westchester, NY. As of Monday, June 28, admission applications will only be accepted online at www.lavc.edu; ADA accommodations are available. No paper admission applications will be accepted.    LAVC to Host a Children’s Author Panel on November 4
The LAVC Family Resource Center and LAVC Child Development Department will hold a panel discussion on "Writing and Illustrating Books For Children" with local children's book authors Hope Anita Smith and Barney Saltzberg on Thursday, November 4 from 7-8 p.m. in the Behavioral Sciences Building, Room 101. This free authors’ symposium will discuss how they became writers and the process of writing and illustrating books for children. Hope Anita Smith is the author and illustrator of Mother Poems, and Barney Saltzberg is the author and illustrator of Peekaboo Kisses and Crazy Hair Day. This event is open to the public.    Volunteers Needed for Bike Path Clean-Up Day on November 6
The Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce and Los Angeles City Council Districts 6, 2, and 12 is looking for volunteers to help with its 27th Annual Clean-up Event on Saturday, November 6. Volunteers will be cleaning up along the Metro Orange Line Bike Path between Sherman Way and Hazeltine Avenue in Van Nuys. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Metro Orange Line Parking Lot at 6060 Van Nuys Blvd. adjacent to Aetna Avenue in Van Nuys. LAVC Student Wins First Place in the 2010 College Seen Photo Contest
The Foundation for California Community College has announced that Deborah Chester, a LAVC student, has won first place in the conceptual category in the 2010 College Seen Photo Contest, which is co-sponsored by the Foundation for California Community College, its CollegeBuy program, and Adobe®. The award winning photo titled “Crossroads” is a unique image of intersecting shadows. Deborah will receive an Adobe® Creative Suite® 5, Design Premium—InDesign® CS5, Photoshop® CS5 Extended, Illustrator® CS5, Dreamweaver® CS5—and her photo will be published in Affinity, the magazine for California Community Colleges.  Construction Update – Partial Closures of Parking Lot G & College Road North
The west side of Parking Lot G (off Burbank Boulevard and Ethel Avenue) will temporarily be closed until October 2010 to begin construction of the college’s new tennis courts, and the entrance to College Road North off Campus Drive will be closed until November 2010 as part of the construction area for the college’s new Family Resource Center.
During the construction of the tennis courts, the east side of Parking Lot G will remain open, and vehicles will be able to access the lot from Burbank Boulevard and from Coldwater Canyon Extension. In addition, existing pedestrian access should remain accessible throughout the duration of the project. The Family Resource Center’s construction staging area will be located near the intersection of College Road North and Campus Drive. The American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC) accepted 20 faculty members from across the nation to participate in this two-year program. Project ACCESS is a mentoring and professional development initiative for two-year college mathematics faculty.   Be aware and get educated! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The LAVC Student Health Center will hold an event for “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” on Wednesday, October 27 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in Monarch Square. This memorable event will feature the opportunity for members of the campus community to dedicate a ribbon in honor of someone who is a breast cancer survivor or someone who has lost their battle with breast cancer. Dedicated ribbons will be attached to a pink balloon and displayed in Monarch Square. There will also be breast exam demonstrations on a prosthetic model, educational materials, resource information and raffle prizes.  Project GRAD Looking for Student Tutors at LAVC
Project GRAD Los Angeles in partnership with LAVC is hiring tutors for the following LAUSD Schools: Pacoima Middle School, San Fernando Middle School, Maclay Middle School, and San Fernando High School. Tutors will earn between $11.04-$13.25 per hour. To be eligible to be a tutor, students must be attending college full-time (at least 12 units) with a minimum GPA of 3.0. LAVC students will now be receiving their financial aid disbursements through the new myLACCD Debit Card. Students should keep an eye out in August for a green LACCD envelope with their debit card. These debit cards through HigherOne, Inc., a financial services company specializing in higher education, will allow students the fastest and easiest way to gain access to their money—literally the same day the District releases it. Two ATM machines will also be placed on campus to allow students to withdraw their disbursement funds using the debit card.  LAVC to Commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Reunification of Germany

The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Los Angeles in partnership with the LAVC Foreign Language and Music Departments will present a special pre-concert dinner, keynote speaker and concert on Friday, October 22 in commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of the Reunificiation of Germany. The pre-concert dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Fireside Room. There will also be a keynote address from Justanian Jampol, the executive director and founder of the Los Angeles Wende Museum and Archive of the Cold War, at 7 p.m., followed by a LAVC Philharmonic Choir, LAVC College Choir, and the San Fernando Master Chorale concert from 8-10 p.m. in the Main Stage Theater. The event is also being sponsored by the LAVC Faculty Senate, UCLA Department of Germanic Languages, California Community College Foreign Language Council, Goethe Institute Los Angeles, and the LAVC Associated Student Union. The LAVC Theater Arts department presents the 2007 Pulitzer Prize-winning play the Rabbit Hole by David Lindsay-Abaire on October 14, 15, 16 and 21, 22, 23 at 8 p.m. in the Horseshoe Theater. In the critcally acclaimed drama, young married couple Becca and Howie Corbett have everything a family could want, until a life-shattering accident turns their world upside down and leaves the couple drifting perilously apart. Rabbit Hole charts their bittersweet search for comfort in the darkest of places and for a path that will lead them back into the light of day.  LAVC to Hold a Diversity Awareness Event on the “Invisible Minority”
The LAVC Diversity Committee will be sponsoring a “Diversity Awareness Assembly: The Invisible Minority” on Tuesday, September 28 from 9:45-11 a.m. in Monarch Hall. The keynote speaker, Dr. Judy Chiasson, coordinator, Human Relations, Diversity and Equity, Los Angeles Unified School District, will discuss the challenges lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students face on campus. The event is open to all faculty, staff and students. Dr. Chiasson is an educator, researcher, writer, and community activist. She is affiliated with numerous local organizations that seek to build safer schools and communities for youth. Dr. Chiasson is also a founder of Gays and Lesbians Initiating Dialogue for Equality (GLIDE), which conducts over 250 workshops per year about sexual orientation and gender identity. She was recently honored by The Advocate magazine as a national leader in “advocating for educational access for all students”.  Free Astronomy Lecture—“Juno: Our Next Probe to Jupiter”
The LAVC Astronomy Group will present a free hour-long lecture titled “Juno: Our Next Probe to Jupiter” on Sunday, September 26 from 7:45-9 p.m. in the Planetarium. Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system, and holds many mysteries that we are still trying to comprehend. Dr. Michela Munoz Fernandez from Jet Propulsion Laboratory will talk about the Juno Mission, an unmanned probe that will be launched to Jupiter within the next year. This talk is open to the public.   LAVC ASU to Hold Student Trustee Elections
The LAVC Associated Student Union (ASU) will hold Student Trustee Elections on September 22 and 23 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and from 3-6 p.m. in Monarch Hall. Students will be able to vote for the candidate they would like to serve as the student trustee on the Los Angeles Community College District’s (LACCD) Board of Trustees.  Attention Students! The Deadline to Drop Classes Without Incurring Fees and Receive a Refund is September 13
If you want to drop a Fall 2010 class without incurring fees and want to receive a refund of your enrollment fees, you must turn in your drop slip to the Admissions and Records Office (in person or by the Internet) by Monday, September 13.

  Final Week of Walk-In Registration…Last Day is September 11
Students who need to turn in add and drop slips, pay fees to the Business Office, speak with an academic counselor and talk to the Financial Aid Office should go to the Fall 2010 Walk-In Registration in the Campus Center. Walk-In Registration ends on Saturday, September 11, and is open Mondays-Thursdays from 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Fridays from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday (September 11 only) from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information, contact the Admissions Office at (818) 947-2553.
