Shane Watkins - Head Coach

Entering his fifth season in charge of the Los Angeles Valley College Women’s Soccer team, Coach Watkins' teams have enjoyed steady improvement, marredHead Coach Shane Watkins by only a few hurdles along the way.  This season, Watkins and his staff are looking to make huge strides having been very hard at work throughout the past year to ensure the upcoming season is nothing less than a success.

Watkins arrived in Valley Glen with a wealth of playing experience prior to a successful coaching career.  Born and raised in San Francisco, he played youth soccer in the Bay Area. Later, he attended Sonoma State University (Division II) for a year before transferring to the University of San Francisco (Division I), where he received his BA in xercise Science in 1997.  After completing college, Watkins went on to play a season of professional soccer in the Costa Rican First Division with A.D. Carmelita of Alejuela.

After returning to the United States, Watkins began a five-year professional playing career in the USL Division One, competing for the San Francisco Bay Seals, Richmond Kickers, Lehigh Valley Steam, Raleigh Capital Express, Long Island Rough Riders, and Connecticut Wolves.  During the 2001-2002 season, Watkins spent part of a season in the Irish Premier League with Galway United.

Following his professional career at the end of the 2002 season, Watkins settled in the Los Angeles Area with his wife, Isela.  Since moving to LA, Watkins has taken over as head coach of the North Hollywood High School Girl’s Soccer Team, where he also teaches physical education.  With Coach Watkins at the helm, the Huskies compiled a record 52-game winning streak.  The team has been ranked consistently in the top eight in the CIF City Section for five years running during Watkins tenure.  He has also coached with the Los Angeles Futbol Club, one of the premier youth clubs in the country.

“LA Valley College is in a great position to be a successful soccer program.  There are tons of talent in the San Fernando Valley, we have one of the best athletic facilities in the area, and it will be even better in the near future. Our nucleus of returning players, which we did not have last year, reveals the 2011 season should be one of the best we've had at the college."

Watkins has a Master of Science in Exercise Science from California University of Pennsylvania. Additionally, he holds a USSF “B” License, and is a NASM certified Performance Enhancement Specialist.

Shane Watkins, his wife Isela, and two sons, Ignacio 7, and Imani 4, reside in Arcadia, in Los Angeles County.
